We wanted a quiet getaway and that’s exactly what we got. We like Hedgesville’s proximity to Berkeley Springs, Harpers Ferry and Winchester, VA. Hedgesville itself doesn’t have a lot going on - a few independent restaurants & shops, a Martin’s grocery store. If you’re looking for Walmart or chain restaurants, there are plenty in nearby Martinsburg. This visit for us, though, was all about staying in and enjoying the woods around us. While there are half a dozen or so homes around the cabin, they’re all well spread out on several acres each so you will have plenty of your own space. There’s even a creek (Stream? Run? Branch? - I am not so good at keeping those straight) that runs behind the cabin and with the recent melt-off, it was easy to hear the water flowing by from the deck. The kitchen has everything you could possibly need for preparing food, from an old-time egg beater & bun warmer to a plethora of storage containers. There were unusually high winds the day we arrived and the power was out for about 7 hours, but we were perfectly comfortable with warm blankets and a cozy fire in the charming fireplace. There are several bird feeders and, after checking to be sure bears are still in hibernation, we filled them to invite the birds in for a closer look. It was a truly lovely stay and a well-needed reset before returning to everyday life. If that’s your version of Almost Heaven, you will love it here.
