Some hotels offer a bed for the night. AMARIA offers something harder to find: genuine stillness. Tucked into the hills of Portugal’s Southwest Alentejo Natural Park, this boutique property gets everything right without trying too hard. The rooms are spacious and beautifully designed, the beds are exceptional, and the views over the valley toward the Atlantic make it difficult to leave. The saltwater pool and wood-fired sauna — both with panoramic vistas — are the perfect reward after a day hiking the Rota Vicentina or exploring the nearby beaches. Breakfast is outstanding: fresh, generous, and homemade in the best sense. Cakes available all day, dinners that rival good local restaurants, and owners Nuno and Phoebe who manage the rare trick of making every guest feel genuinely welcomed without hovering. Pure, unhurried, and quietly exceptional. One of the best stays in Portugal.

We immediately felt like guests at someone’s beloved home. There were many exquisite relaxation “areas” that Nuno had choreographed to perfection. The property is magical! At night the angels stand by to insure you sleep soundly. You will see them if you try!

Leaving. There should be notation when booking a stay that advises to book for twice as long as you think. It was painful leaving after a meager 3 nights in paradise.

I had a wonderful solo stay at Amaria while walking the Fisherman's Trail. From the moment I arrived, Phoebe and Nuno made me feel genuinely welcome and completely at home. The food was a real highlight. Everything was freshly prepared on site, from the delicious breakfasts and snacks to the thoughtful evening meals. Great care goes into every detail, creating experiences that feel personal rather than routine. What stands out most is that Amaria feels like much more than a hotel. The beautiful sauna experience, the yoga deck nestled among the trees, the peaceful and impeccably kept rooms, and the carefully curated food all reflect the care and taste that Phoebe and Nuno bring to the place. The location was perfect - set within the national park with incredible trails right on the doorstep. It was a relaxing and memorable stay, and I wouldn't hesitate to return.
