The Black Lion Hotel

Location - very sweet village.

The Owners called me on our first day out. I was travelling with my 14 yr old son and we were in Wells-next-the-sea and received a call from the owner saying housekeeping had gone into our room and the headboard had been pulled off the wall and a double plug socket had been ripped off the wall! She blamed us! I was gobsmacked! I assured her when we left the room that morning after breakfast the headboard was fine if a bit crooked - as it was the day before when we had arrived. She wouldn’t have it and kept on saying “how can we come to an agreement” over and over. I kept assuring her we hadn’t done anything to the bed/headboard/plug, why would we, and if we’d caused any damage I would have alerted them to it. It became clear she wasn’t budging and I said this seemed like a scam of some sort at which point her husband came into the call and reiterated what his wife had been saying and got quite condescending and rude about it and said he was going to get all our belongings packed up and left in the pub and that we were to leave - they didn’t us there the 2nd night we’d booked and paid for. I was absolutely shocked. Never have I been “thrown out” of a hotel. I was beyond stunned. We returned to the pub a couple of hours later to collect our belongings and the owner (wife) was there. She was very hostile, and very unprofessional imo. I think they need to learn a thing or two about business, customer service and general manners. She assured me she had reported us to booking.com for “misconduct” and had spoken to booking.com and asked them to refund us the night we were now not allowed to stay there for. I asked for proof before I returned their room key but she said she had spoken to booking.com by phone. I filed a form on booking.com there and then regarding the complaint but have yet to hear back. I fully suspect she was lying, and that she and her husband have no intention of refunding me our 2nd night (£120) despite being effectively thrown out!

Friendly staff and great menu choice

Short one night stop - friendly staff and a warm welcome! Room was large with a comfortable bed, wouldn't recommend for anyone with mobility problems as the stairs are quite narrow and steep and there were additional steps in our bedroom. Delicious breakfast!

Really lovely place to stay to explore north Norfolk. Great quirky room with huge bed and fab food.

Overnight stay for Heritage Live gig at Sandringham. Little tricky to find in a beautiful, but tiny village, and with limited parking - paid-car park a short walk - but what a great find! Large room, huge comfortable bed, separate dressing room and spacious bathroom. Shower was good, but oddly positioned on bath I thought so had to angle a certain way. Best was a fab breakfast the next day, lots of choice on menu as long as like cooked stuff. Interesting village to explore, lots of history, perfectly located to visit beaches at Wells on the Sea and Holkam.

Having stayed at the Black Lion last year and thoroughly enjoyed their hospitality, we were really pleased that nothing has changed. Great staff fantastic restaurant and very comfortable rooms – what’s not to like
