"We'd like to go back one day."

9.0

We stayed at the Hotel d’Ayres for two nights in August 2025 and enjoyed out time there enormously. The weather was hot and whilst the hotel has some attractive and apparently comfortable public rooms, everyone was outside until quite late. We had a good room at the front looking over the pond and dining area. The staff were pleasant and whilst they did seem to be run off their feet, they were attentive. We didn’t use the swimming pool which looks like a new addition: we could hear, but never saw, a tennis court. In some respects two nights was one too few. It is a lovely place and I am sure that we will think of our two nights there as being just a little special, and the ambience justified the price. But I think that the food side could be sharpened up a little. If you stay somewhere for two nights you really don’t expect to have to eat out on the second as you have had all you want off the menu on the first.

The cooking is good, but the evening meal menus were inflexible, and we finished up having a course we didn’t want to get the course we did. As the menus were pretty well based on beef and veal, they were also old-fashioned. The menu seemed not to have changed on the second night: as we had had what we wanted on the first, we went into Meyreuis. One main course came with a take on ratatouille: the other lacked vegetables. I would suggest some greater flexibility in the menus and at the very least a dish of the day. Breakfast was also somewhat odd. There was fruit salad and yogurt. There were two types of ham (Jambon and air-dried) and cheese. But no tomatoes, cucumber, lettuce, no cornichons, and most importantly of all, no cereals. All a bit old-fashioned. There were plenty of pots of jam, but they were all Apricot. Odd.
