"An excellent stay, marred by broken central heating in January."

8.0

The location - right in the middle of Brechin town centre and the historic conservation area - was perfect. The apartment is spacious and has high ceilings and many other antique features. Meanwhile, the carpets, furniture, decoration and equipment are tastefully modern and fresh. The TVs have Amazon Firesticks, are connected by fast wi-fi, and have Netflix accounts. There was plenty of hot water for showers and the towels and linen looked new.

The big problem was the heating. We stayed in January, it was at or below freezing all the time, and snow flurries fell periodically. When we arrived, the gas boiler was putting out 80 degree centigrade water to the radiators, which were set to maximum, so most of the flat was uncomfortably hot. However, the main bedroom was stone cold and the central heating controller on the wall was powered off. We reported these problems, they were checked, but we were told nothing could be done in the short term. We were given a brand new 2 kWh electric heater to use. We assembled it and ran it in the main bedroom most of the time; this just about managed to make the main bedroom useable. Then we discovered that the heating cut out after breakfast and lunch for 90 minutes or so, and we had no control over it. So we had to move the portable heater from the bedroom to the lounge to fill these gaps. It was a patch solution and no more, so we sat under blankets. The inadequate heating was the big one, but there were also a couple of additional minor problems: the shower cubicles are very narrow, the beds are overly soft, the wi-fi would buffer for no apparent reason at certain times of day, and there were no small tumblers in the cupboards, only large beer and wine glasses.
