The Kiln - Historic 3Br Cottage in Dartmoor

Great location! We stayed there for the weekend to visit a local friend and hike in Dartmoor National Forest. We had a wonderful visit with our friend— and really appreciated the proximity of this rental property. It’s NOT a 3 bedroom cottage; it’s a 3 bedroom unit like a flat or apartment within a larger house that has multiple units. This one was somewhat underground in parts of the house. The grounds and gardens are beautiful. There’s a lovely front garden with a clothesline, which we used to hang out our wet laundry. The host is lovely and welcoming. The property is dog-friendly.

First, we arrived and were disappointed that we had not rented the cottage to ourselves— there were multiple units within a larger house. We arrived later than we expected and there were ants in the cupboards and the host sprayed poison all onto the glasses and dishes (so that meant we could not use any of them.) I was shocked. It wasn’t what I expected based on the photos and the description. I thought we had a private patio (it was a shared patio). The interior floor sloped so dramatically that I fell down twice inside the apartment. At the time I fell, I was walking through the hallway. Sober. The slanted floor also made it challenging to take a bath (the water sloshed to one side), and we didn’t sleep well at all. Poor mattresses.

Internal roller doors could be of better quality. And external door to one of the bedrooms didn't lock.

Beautiful location with a relaxed friendly feel. Heather and the team were lovely.

We would have liked a small area outside the cottage that was private just for us, more due to having the dogs than anything else.

How Heather meets and greets you. She explains all you need to know and answers any questions about the local area to help you settle in. We don’t often feel sad to leave and go back home but we could have definitely stayed longer.

We had a lovely stay in The Kiln cottage. There were 6 of us adults staying in the cottage, with 3 nights stay. We appreciate the historic charm & character of the cottage, whilst enjoying the modern comforts. Our host was welcoming, helpful & friendly. Communication was 10/10. The bedrooms & lounge room were very comfortable. The kitchen was clean & well equipped, we cooked & ate delicious candle lit meals around the large dinner table. The bathrooms were clean & we enjoyed relaxing in hot bubble baths. There are washing machine facilities available in the cottage. The local pub down the road is worth a visit, the food is delicious & we enjoyed the meat raffle & meeting the friendly locals & playing a game of pool. We highly recommend staying here in The Kiln cottage, we look forward to visiting again.
