"A beautiful building, a disappointing encounter"

1.0

This is a beautiful old building that has been renovated to a high state of glory. The tile work and the decorations are marvelous. It is located in the old Medina, down many windy passages from the outside street. It has an elevator (renovation!) that goes all the way to the roof, where they serve excellent food.

When we arrived, our host told us that the medina in Fez is so large and so complex that we could not leave the riad without a guide. All right. So we asked for a guide to take us to see the leatherworks the next day. We had booked five nights at this riad, and the leatherworks was our first objective in Fez. Our host said the guide was going to cost us one, two, three, four, five hundred Moroccan dollars, and the guide would be there for us at 10. We didn't care for the guide dictating the time of the outing. We also thought the cost was prohibitive. We went upstairs and did some research. The following morning we were summoned from our breakfast because our guide had arrived. We went down and told our host that we had looked up the $500 guided tour: it is a 5-hour 5-stop tour of the city. That is not what we had asked for. We just wanted to go to the leather works. A guide to the leatherworks (according to our research) is 30-50 MAD, NOT $500. Our host told us that he does not deal in guide trips that are that inexpensive. Okay. We canceled the $500 guide. We went upstairs and packed. We couldn't face four days of not being able to go out without a minder. And it seemed that we were going to be landed with the most expensive possible guides for every outing. We bagged it and took a taxi to Rabat. In Rabat we could wander everywhere at will, day or night. We had a wonderful time.

"Traumatic. Disastrous."

1.0

Nothing.

Avoid at all costs. My wife and I – both experienced travellers and 74 years old – had an appalling experience here. Constant issues with no hot water and no heating led to us declining to pay any further money (the city tax?) on departure. This led to us being assaulting and falsely imprisoned in the Riad. The Manager insisted on calling the police even though we made numerous offers – we had little choice - to pay the money. Matters were eventually resolved at the police station. It subsequently transpired that the person who represented himself as a policeman was in fact a civilian and a friend, or even the boss, of the Manager. The response of the owner is absurd. We actually did walk out the door but were manhandled (with our luggage) back in by the manager and his henchmen. So, not only were we detained, we were assaulted: yes, two 74 years old seniors were assaulted in a foreign country. Can you imagine how upsetting that was? While in detention - for at least 45 minutes - we made numerous offers to pay the tax but the Manager insisted on the police. Do not dream of going near the place.

One thing I liked was the Morrocan architecture and atmosphere of the Hotel

Due to the hotel's location , It is difficult to access by car Also bellboy cames and took the luggage to the hotel , Lasly it was uncomfortable because it was rainig Anothe issue was that porters are blatant and rude in demanding more Tips during the check-out
