The Essex Golf & Country Club Hotel

The locations and facility is great

The double room came with 2 single beds joined together which was really uncomfortable. The mattress had springs poking out and started hurting my back.

Absolutely disgusting experience. My partner stayed at this hotel alone and was treated in a blatantly racist and humiliating way by the hotel manager. The manager came directly to his room to interrogate him about his personal details for no valid reason, making him feel targeted, uncomfortable, and unsafe that he left immediately. This was not professionalism or “policy” — it was discrimination. No other guest should have to deal with being singled out and treated like a criminal because of their race. The behaviour was aggressive, invasive, and completely unacceptable from someone working in hospitality. We will never stay here again and strongly warn others, especially people of colour, to avoid this hotel. Management should be ashamed of how guests are treated here.

Everything was very good, clean and comfortable. Beautiful location. Breakfast was good.

The location wasn't perfect for us, but for golf lovers is good.

The whole experience was great

Was a lovely stay amazing view of the pond from the hot tub can see people playing golf lots of wild life very quite area. Very close walking distance to the country club restaurant and full use of facilities also able to order food to the lodge. Decorated lovely beds were very comfortable. Good distance to Colchester zoo

The lodge wasn’t very clean there was yellow stains on all the bed sheets and the blanket runner. Lots of cobwebs that must have been sitting there for a while as they were thick webs in most corners and was quite dust everywhere. For what you’re paying to stay there is a luxury to me I don’t want to stay somewhere dirty takes 2 seconds to dust some cobwebs and get rid of spiders.

The room was nice, although very dark and not very sound proof!

We arrived early as was going to a wedding. Asked if they could book us a taxi, they would not but gave us a list to ring ourselves, most the numbers were not existent and nearly half an hour later my daughter decided to drive. Not what we wanted! we done the paperwork when we was there at this time to save time later and paid. Arrived back at hotel at 8.45 i rang the night porter 8 times and my daughter rang 5 times no answer just kept ringing out. We were freezing left outside and no one to turn too but to keep ringing. Finally we got the key. As I said the room was okay. Awoke the next day no clue where to go for breakfast as there are 3 main buildings. You would have thought someone would have advised us on arrival. Went back up to reception ohh yes that is upstairs. I am in a wheelchair so gladly there was a lift but had to wait for the staff to use before we could. Went up no one to greet us and tell us where everything was. So we just sat down and helped ourselves in the end. The food although looked of good quality was cold, the toaster took ages to toast so ended up with warm bread. One thing, the coffee was lovely !

Most staff friendly and helpful. Balcony dining area on bar was lovely with great views.

Rooms were noisy as could hear people in next room. Also cleaning staff were chatting on corridor about 7.45 which woke me up.
