Big Elk Steak House - HomeStay

Very good price for a great place, a lot of greenery around, many plants and flowers, very convenient location. The nearest beach is a 10-minute walk, a 7/11 store and other stores with everything you need are also within walking distance. I don't use a bike, this was important to me. The room has everything you need - refrigerator, safe, kettle etc. Very friendly staff, I really enjoyed the conversation. Not all the staff, but manager speaks English perfectly. There is a very comfortable and atmospheric small restaurant here, you can also have lunch here (not only delicious steaks, Thai food and burgers are very tasty too). In addition: good fast wifi. Who needs internet for work - this is very important! I was completely satisfied to get all this for a reasonable price.

I had bad luck with the swimming pool as it was being renovated and was closed while I was here. However I received a information about this from booking.com and the price of booking was discounted 30% as it was indicated during the booking. It would be better if the pool was working. However, I paid 30% less, so I have no complaints. As the staff told me, the pool should be working again soon.

The restaurant it self offers great food and the stuff there is super nice, including the chef that was absolutely wonderful!

The experience in the hotel/home stay was bad from start. No reception, no English speaking personal. They charged me full price even though said that they will give 30% off as the pool is not working. In the end I paid the original price showing on booking before knowing about the pool. The pool itself is filled with dirty water and bugs all over it. Then they gave me the wrong room and when I showed them my reservation, they pulled a guest from his room to switch between us, was very uncomfortable for me. The room was not clean! Very old wood all over, covered with ants.!! The shower had no hot water, and the drain was filled with leaves so the water came up every shower. The WiFi is really bad, doesn't work at all! When I left after 3 nights, I tried to get a texi from there, but as there is no reception, and no English speaking personal, they made me wait for an hour!!!! Until I decided to just walk and find my own taxi. Really disappointed by this stay.

Decided to take a punt on staying at Big Elk from a shortlist of places I had identified in hindsight my only regret was not to have been staying there for longer. It's located at the bend of the road, so I've probably missed it on previous trips to Koh Chang, but once inside it's a beautiful set-up of really nice bungalows located around a pool. The bungalows themselves are really nice - lovely furnishings and very quiet. The setting is great with the jungle in the background and with the restaurant and reception at the front there is no traffic sounds at all. Best of all are the staff - really friendly and helpful and make for a great stay there, including the lovely cats and dogs. Have to also give a mention to the food at Big Elk, which is really marvellous, very high quality. All in all a great place to stay and we'll definitely be back.

The pool was out of service and we learned about it only when arrived, the owner offered us free breakfast instead. The water in the bathroom was smelly and there has been no room cleaning during our 4 days stay.

Location. Between two busy areas so great to walk between. Lots of nice cats and dogs to play with. Ate at the restaurant which was delicious and really good value for money. Staff were wonderful. Free pool table.

Constructive feedback: Quite a few mosquitoes kept getting through into the bathroom. Due to drought we weren’t able to use the pool while we were there, but owner kindly gave us a free cooked breakfast as way of apology.

We loved our stay here. The staff was very welcoming, the bed was comfortable, and the location was perfect. I would love to stay here again!

The only small critique I have was that the cleaning was only every 3 days, and by the third day the room got rather dirty/sandy. Besides that everything was perfect :)

Beautiful room and terrace, right by the pool, outdoor shower was lovely. A short walk to get to amenities and restaurants. We ate the steak here, it was delicious, played pool and jenga. We felt really relaxed and welcomed, friendly host, nice and quiet area. A short wall to the beach, where you could see a beautiful sunset. The room had everything you needed. Cute cats too.

The pool was very chlorinated. We had to share a double bed, which was fine but not preferred. Kettle doesn't switch off and had to unplug fan to use adaptor - not a major deal.
