The Cottage on the Square, Wensley - Derbyshire Country Cottage.

We had a fantastic break over Christmas at The Cottage on the Square. The location is fantastic, with great views from the surrounding roads and villages, and it's super convenient for trips to several nearby towns and cities including Matlock, Bakewell and Buxton. The cottage itself is well-equipped and very cosy, with a log burner and central heating for extra warmth and comfort during the winter months. Our group of four adults had plenty of space and we had a wonderful time during our visit. Communication from the host was excellent and it was very easy to access the property.

We had no issues during our stay at all, but the square car park can sometimes get a little busy and it might be necessary to park on the road.

Cosy warm and welcoming. Everything you needed supplied. Really lovely welcoming pack.

Big van parked outside front door the whole stay, made it hard to locate it at night when we arrived.

Location and the 10am checkout ,given that the handbook asks that you vacuum through and clean log burner before you leave !!!I wouldn’t dream of leaving the washing up ,but come on this was ridiculous !! The cleaner was outside at 10 saying it takes her 3 hours to deep clean ,but there were cobwebs upstairs and dead spiders in the lounge when we arrived

The location was perfect, the distribution of the rooms were adequate, the bath and shower were in good working order, the kitchen was a good size, there was plenty of hot water, the living room was cosy. Overall the property was clean. Thank you for the welcome pack, and for the pint of milk, it was a very nice treat!

The twin room had mattresses that are more suitable for teenage children, they weren't firm enough for adults, and one of the mattresses smelt as if someone had urinated in the bed! We recommend that waterproof mattress covers are used, with a mattress topper, so we'd encourage you to invest in some bedding and mattresses, and this was very discouraging. We'd also recommend some nicer cutlery, as the knives and forks were about as basic as you could find, in fact, I could find better in the charity shops. These finishing touches would have made our visit more pleasant, and we'd certainly book again, if the mattresses were changed.

Perfect as a base to explore the Peak District

The property was great but no pubs in village so we had to get cabs on both nights. We realised this before we booked so not an issue but a place to eat within walking distance would make it perfect
