"Disappointing stay overall. We expected more from what is described as a luxury hotel."

4.0

We enjoyed the location, friendly staff, Orangery for breakfast and for the most part the spa facilities and the food and drink.

Apart from the Orangery and Spa area the communal spaces and our room were very tired looking and in need of renovation. The website doesn’t accurately represent what you find on arrival. This is not a luxury hotel and shouldn’t be described as one. We had a large tear in our bedroom curtains, the bathroom was cold, the shower in our room only feed hot water, we had an extension cable on our bedroom side table with lots of plugs in it, very very strange art work and statues throughout the hotel, cold eggs and coffee served one morning, no draft beer, pork belly with no crackling (I was told that was how it comes), only one shower gets hot in the spa the other is broken, a large gap in the poolside emergency exit doors means the pool area is cold and there are cob webs in the pool area ceiling and Orangery lighting. Individually the things I have listed above may appear trivial, but collectively along with the very attractive website and luxury hotel description it made for an average / disappointing experience when my expectations were higher.

"Sadly disappointing having once loved this hotel"

4.0

Beautiful grounds, swimming pool, nice staff. Lovely views. Easy access to Bath.

We have been visiting this hotel for around 27 years with many, many wonderful memories but hadn’t been for a few years. We decided to return for my husband’s 60th birthday present as a special treat. We were so disappointed. The hotel is tired. Downstairs is still ok but our room was desperately in need of refurbishment, poorly lit, very unwelcoming, the radiators off when we arrived in -2c. I love antiques but the furniture was dark, oppressive, (pretty ugly), the carpet was brown and stained (like something from a student flat) and the bathroom had peeling paint and plaster and a yellow stained lino. We had no hot water on both mornings for showers (the hotel did offer us a 10% discount for this). Given the price we paid for this room and the fact it was supposed to be a special treat, I felt upset and aggrieved. (I’m very polite and not the type to shout about - more inclined to shed a tear of frustration) The issues with the bedroom and bathroom should be fixed immediately and should not have to wait for a refurbishment of the whole property. It really is not right to charge these prices. Beyond the room, the restaurant no longer has a gourmet menu and wonderful wine list, it is very much pub basics now which is such a shame as its restaurant was absolutely superb. The specials had sold out by 8pm on our first night. Breakfast was the in a similar vein with no more croissants, no bread by toaster (had to ask twice) missing ingredients from the full English and so forth. The hotel has so much potential with its indoor pool and kids club (and I believe some rooms are more attractive and welcoming) and I truly hope it will return to its former glory, but sadly it was a terrible disappointment and should not be charging £360 a night for a so called deluxe room of this kind.

"A lovely way to start the festive season."

Lovely setting, fabulous food, great service.

There were a lot of families so perhaps not for those looking for a quite senior romantic weekend away from the kids 😊

"Quirky but not really luxury"

6.0

Breakfast was fine. Location was fine. Car park too far from reception. No trolleys for luggage. Torn curtains in bedroom. Not enough ‘working ’ top on bedroom. Noisy wardrobe doors. I could write an essay!

"Really enjoyed the caring staff, elegant antique furnishings and features. Would like to return."

10.0

Staff went above and beyond to accommodate my needs. Lunch was required outside of normal hours, but the staff was willing to rustle something up. Breakfast the next morning was excellent, despite my showing up late. Loved seeing guests with their well behaved dogs, babies and children. An immediate observation was the attention to detail - even the waste paper basket in my room was made to look pretty with a lace doily placed inside rather than the usual plastic bag.

Lighting in bathroom not adequate
