Dunedin delight - sunny, stylish villa

Upon opening the door, we were hit with the pungent aroma of cigarette smoke. The main bedroom window is broken, leaving around a 10mm gap between the glass and frame, they have tried to tape it, though I dont think this makes it safe and secure from intruders or the elements. There was what appeared to be dried food on the bed sheets, which also had ink and other stains. There was a dirty mug in the bathroom vanity. My partner had an allergic reaction to cat hair. While pet friendly is hidden in the list of facilities, it isn't specified clearly in the listing. There is also minimal cleaning of animals between guests as pet hair was visible in the property. There were balls of dust and hair beside the bed and a yellow stain, the colour of urine on the skirting board. The "stylish" decor described and artfully photographed, is in real life, tired and falling to bits, with marks all over the walls, peeling wall paper, threadbare carpet and scratches and dust covering the furniture. We had to leave quickly due to allergies, but aside from this, the house was filthy and, in real life, does not reflect the pictures. It's more akin to student accommodation than the standard expected of a holiday rental, at this price and with this rating. Leaving resulted in significant costs for alternative accommodation on a public holiday and changes to a tour as we couldn't get accommodation for the final night due to events in Dunedin that weekend. We requested a full refund and were declined by the owner who only offered to change the bed sheets, which does not resolve many of the issues here. I immediately called Booking.com who advised me not to stay there for health reasons and have been supportive of a refund. The owner has ignored multiple attempts by booking.com to contact them and failed to actually offer a resolution for our lost finances, stress and upset during our trip. Booker beware, it's really not worth the risk.

Gorgeous little home with a lovely vibe. Newly renovated bathroom & beautiful furniture. It’s a shame the property is in such bad shape & quite grubby. Photos provided were quite deceptive.

In desperate need of some maintenance. Animal hair all over the floor. Considering the high price tag it wasn’t up to scratch. Very awkward entry based on the very steep street. Cracked windows that couldn’t be opened with cobwebs all over them. Wheelie bins were at full capacity & no coffee or bath mat provided. Really uncomfortable beds with blood stains on the sheets. I did attempt to contact the property manager with the phone number provided but only received a generic response.

Brilliant location. Plenty of amenities within walking distance and only a few minutes by car to city centre.

Parking was a little tight but we have an SUV so fine for smaller vehicles.
