"A romantic remote house a bit on the basic side."

6.0

This is a lovely location, quiet and remote even in August. The grounds are at about 1200 m, which saved us from the worst heat, and as there is quite some wood around, walks were possible even during the afternoon. The house is fully ecological, with solar panels feeding the 12 volt lights, and gas from bottles for the fridge, cooking and hot water. There is one plug for charging devices which need 220 volt, and one is discouraged from using it much. We liked that we could just start walking from the house as well. The coop in the next village down the road is ok equipped (though it was good that we used the Lidl in Meran for stocking up initially). The coop only takes cash, but there is a cash machine in the village. The bed in the large bedroom was very comfy, and I liked watching the stars through the window.

The host alleges that the house is accessible without a 4x4 drive, and because only one review said that a 4x4 is needed, I thought we would be fine. We were not. We parked about 450 m from the property, but the car would only go up to the asphalt street without luggage and one of us plus dog. Aurelio was nice enough to drive our luggage and shopping down and our luggage up when we left. However, it should have been clear that a normal car can not go to the house. Instructions for the house are oral only, with the help of google translate. This takes an hour if you do not speak Italian, the only language the host speaks. A written manual in English and Italian would have been nice. I also found it strange to be asked whether we need a fridge for a week's stay in August (day temperatures up to 31 Celsius) in a house remote from shops (it would be an hour walk to the coop). When we said we need a fridge it was turned on. We were discouraged from using the fireplace, although we stressed we have fireplaces in our main home. It was not a problem in August, but contributes to the evaluation of value for money. I also was a little appaled that there is no outside bin. This can be very smelly if you have a dog and are unable to dig a hole for you know what, and if we had stayed longer than a week the bins would have overflowed. The electricity only went out once, and we had a night tripping about with our mobiles, before we connected one of the spare batteries. Maybe a few battery driven chrismas lights for such emergencies would have been nice. We paid in excess of 1600 for a week .
