Historic First Floor Unit in Shaw Community STL 1E

The location was excellent. It was right down the street from the Botanical Gardens and there were a couple of nice little restaurants on the same block. It wasn't more than 15-20 minutes from anywhere we went. The kitchen was fully stocked and had everything that we needed.

The first thing we noticed upon arrival was that the couch in the living room was broken, as was one of the tables. Normally, I wouldn’t mention minor issues like these, but they were just the beginning. The lamp shade in the first bedroom looked smashed, the ceiling fan in the back bedroom had only one working light bulb with no pull string to turn the light off, and a small writing/computer desk in the back bedroom was paired with a plastic lawn chair that appeared to be at least 15 years old. The living room rug was covered in dirt and crumbs, as if it hadn’t been vacuumed in weeks. The host did offer to send someone to clean it, but at that point, I felt it should have already been taken care of before we arrived. Rather than dealing with a cleaner, I just used the vacuum that was available and cleaned it myself. Hardwood floors were in every room, besides the bathroom and kitchen were another issue. Based on how dirty they were, I have no idea when they were last cleaned. My wife walked around in white socks the next morning, and the bottoms turned black from the dirt and grime. While towels were technically provided, they were not standard-sized bath towels. Instead, they appeared to be bath mats, the kind you lay beside the tub to keep the floor from getting wet. Washcloths were also supplied, but they were left in the back corner of the bathtub, still wet from the previous guests. The fact that the management group charges $125 cleaning fee is completely absurd. The only thing that the cleaner seemed to do was make the beds and take out the trash. The guests are supposed to start the dishwasher before they leave and the cleaner is supposed to unload it. The dishes were still in the dishwasher when we arrived. Overall, the entire place had a "landlord special" feel, as if the furnishings had been pulled from the side of the road. Do not let the photos fool you the pictures make the rental look far nicer than it actually is.

Everything was comfortable. Only a couple very minor improvements need to be made like a bar under the stairs to hang coats. Maybe replace the smaller couch.

it was so wonderful to get to spend my daughter's 18th birthday in a piece of history.

Location

The pictures did not accurately reflect the state of the property. The unit was dimly lit, with light bulbs missing. The family room was disheveled with a large stain on the couch. There was minimal cooking utensils, notably only one small pan for cooking. Beds were clean with fresh sheets, but very uncomfortable. We stayed for one of the three nights and opted to book at a hotel for the rest of our trip. When we notified the staff of our concerns, they did offer to have the unit cleaned again, which I did appreciate.

Proximity to the botanical garden

Dirty, cutlery missing, dishwasher not unpacked so I only disvovered utensils later, no handsoap in the toilet, less than half toilet paper roll...I had to buy that on the first night, wifi connection cut out on the second day....unpleasant stay.

It was a very neat and clean apartment with all the amenities as mentioned. Stay was very comfortable. Good wifi. Parking available, though we did not use it.

Nothing specific...it was all good.
