Smitty's Home Away From Home

Verna was a wonderful host & made us feel at home. Her place had all the amenities we needed for a week's stay on the island. The location was centrally located on the island, not far from the grocery stores. It was nice to have 3 bedrooms & a living room. She's a great decorator & put a lot of effort into making sure her place was cozy. We enjoyed our morning coffee & breakfast each morning on the balcony & enjoyed the views of the harbor where the cruise ships arrived each morning. She has a beautiful rock garden in the backyard w/ coconut & mango trees. Pretty home up on the hillside amongst all the locals.

I tried to check in but they never gave answered the phone. Ignored my reservation and I had to get a hotel last minute…in the rain. Ignored my emails as well.

This was the worst stay ever. When booked the place seemed to be in a complete different area of Charlotte Amalia. We were instructed to call the host for directions and host made us call another person to explain how to get there, as apparently GPS shows wrong. That persons direction were so vague, if I wouldn’t have known the area, it would have been impossible to find. It took us over an hour to figure out the exact location and the actual area where it is, is not a good or safe one. I would have never booked anything in that area. Not safe! The host was talking so much that the checking took about 2 hours. The place is terrible, dirty, (see the pictures) overloaded, most things didn’t work, such as fans, balcony doors, lights and eventually no hot water either. There was leftover shower shop from previous gusts, hairs and handkerchiefs lying around. There was cat litter in one bathrooms on the floor and in the kitchen every drawer had a mold smell, filthy doors, one drawer had some strange dust of some insect residue. The one bedroom had a very strong odor of moth balls, the host denied there were any but we later found them in a drawer. Impossible to sleep with that odor. There is a bright spotlight outside the other bedroom that lid up the bedroom like daylight and shutters couldn’t be closed, curtains not thick enough to keep dark for the night. When I booked it wasn’t clear that the cleaning fee of whooping $75 is additional to the already very overpriced place totaling over $318.00 for ONE NIGHT. Stay away of this host and especially this property. Also the parking that is provided is ideally for a smaller car, difficult to get out. Since we were late, tired and no other option was available for that night we choose staying. We should not have… this was a waste of money!

Wonderful hosts. Very helpful. Lots of space with the 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.

Would have been very helpful to know that the hosts lives upstairs and greets you when you arrive. It was raining when we arrived and unfortunately their driveway is painted with glossy paint and it was very slippery and fairly steep. So you had to move very slowly and carefully. There is also a long flight of stairs to climb with your luggage. It is a long walk into town so we cabbed it each time.
