La Magnolia Sorrento - City Centre Hotel

Great location

The owner of the hotel was very helpful and friendly, gave lots of recommendations for restaurants etc. It was in an excellent position, close to town and harbour. It was very private.

The only thing I would liked was a proper window in the bedroom, we only had a skylight, which made the room dark and without any view.

Location was the beat and Claudio was fabulous host.

The mattress was old and soft. There is a family that lives upstairs, which I was not aware of and I am a light sleeper so could hear them walking, talking, scooting chairs, yelling at their kid but, by 10 pm all was quite till around 7 am.

The property is very conveniently located in the center of Sorrento, and a maximum of 15-20 minutes' walk to most places you want to go as a tourist. The staff is also pretty helpful -- Dario helped me with a couple of issues and was delightful. But I'm afraid that that's where it stops.

I booked this place on the strength of others guests' glowing reviews, and I don't get it. First, there is no possibility of breakfast, though Booking says there is. Second, there is no reception -- you WhatsApp the staff with questions and they are there to meet guests. Also noteworthy, the property is perfumed with a synthetic air freshener which smells very strong, and very cheap and cloying. It made me feel nauseous -- dear Magnolia, please know that some people have fragrance sensitivities that can provoke migraines. More importantly, the room didn't have full sized windows and so was cavernously dark, and the bed was uncomfortable -- the bed base had wooden slats, but not the flexible ones that absorb movement; they are rigid, thick, wooden slats (see pic). I like a firm surface to sleep on but I felt every one of those slats in my back and got very little rest, which is not great when you want energy to explore a new place. When another guest complained about it, the response was that yes, the mattresses need to be changed -- ! Also noteworthy for tall or larger-sized people, the shower cabin is very small and hard to maneuver into and out of. I can live with all of this, but not at the price listed for the room. Booking offered a cheaper deal than the property's site, but I still paid 180€ / night. I realize that Sorrento commands high prices, but that is very much mid-range, and neither the room nor property had the charm or comfort to warrant it. When it rained for a day, I realized that there was nowhere comfortable in the place to sit, not the reception area with small tables, not the room, and that I didn't want to take shelter there. At a lesser price I wouldn't care; at almost 200€ / night, I'm left with feeling that I didn't get value for money.
