Hotel YMCA - Near Meenakshi Amman Temple Madurai

The YMCA Madurai,is centrally located - a few minutes Rip Off Priced autorickshaw ride away from the main bus stand , right in the vicinity of Meenakshi Amman Temple and a very much walkable distance from the Palace.The receptionist was very polite and checked us in though we were pretty early ( I had emailed them of a possible early arrival anyways ). The room was a very basic barebones, dated decor but with a functional airconditioner and a hotwater geyser in the bathroom. Breakfast is included in the room price and can be availed in a cosy message style dining area situated on the terrace that has fine views of Madurai Meenakshi Temple albeit in its current under renovation garb. Breakfast is vegetarian fare in Tamil cuisine style - crisp wada,soft Idly,chutney,sambar,bread,butter,jam,tea and coffee.No complaints at all. The Front Desk also sells a few knock knacks and I was tempted to buy a bottle of organic honey at a reasonable price but am yet to sample it.How bad could it be especially when taken with a pinch of honey ?! The YMCA property has a certain old world charm that grows onto you.

Some of the negatives are a quick fix from the property management - Rooms need a fresh coat of paint,bathroom tiles need a bit of deep clean with more hygienic bath mats and yes,the room floors are sticky on bare feet possibly due to a need for a deep clean followed by use of an industrial grade floor cleaner. There are many rooms that are used as utility spaces but exposing their shabby contents as the doors to these rooms are always open.One is requested to wash one's own breakfast plate after eating but no dishwashing liquid or scrubbers are at hand making one wonder about the next person who would eat out of it ! This property needs a bit of sprucing up and tender loving care with it easily falling into the Heritage catagory. I look forward to staying here again especially after the cleaning aspect is looked into.Please consider my comments as constructive critique and not defamation.
