Yala Eco Bush Camp

What a shame about this. It was very very off road and when we got there, one lone ‘tent’, not part of a bigger site. Very isolated and very run down - nothing close to luxury. Holes in the mosquito net, mice in bathroom. It was camping in the very basic sense. We couldn’t stay there and found a luxury resort with pool for the same price. However the owner was very helpful and his staff took us to find somewhere else.

Great location, very friendly staff and good dinner. We left one night earlier because we were not happy with the state of the accommodation. The level of service, support and understanding we received following our cancellation was excellent and outstanding. Thank you.

Photos on booking.com outdated by 5-7 years, meanwhile tent in dilapidated state. Mosquito netting in front of windows full of holes, door handles broken, can lock front but come in via zip in back, strong chemical smell, bathroom and shower floors ripped up and broken.

1:- The way to find the property. There was no information and it is impossible to get there with TUK TUK or car. You only get there by 4 x 4. No signs and Google maps will bring you somewhere else where you get stuck with the TUK TUK. 10-20 min bumpy road. 2:- There was 4 frogs inside the toilet - WTF good luck going at night time with frogs everywhere to the bathroom No mosquito net, knowing there is mosquitos and bugs in the room. The tent has holes on each window, no air flow in the room - they keep all windows close because you can not see how bad and broken the tent is, no fan and the room is dark. There was no door handle to open and close the room easy. Everything seemed to break apart. 3:- Shower has very very slow cold water and it’s outside, you can shower and see the frogs are showering with you, while mosquitoes are watching both of you. 4:- Owner lives in Colombo, she has very very poor communication with guest. Gives no information about cash only, off road / bumpy road for 10-20 min, no access with TUK TUK or car, no electricity, not kids friendly, over price dinner USD 12 plus 15.5% TAX for rice and 2 small pieces of chicken (whatever part of the chicken it was, smaller than a golf ball) 5:- Barely oh wait no phone reception or electricity for phone charging or other electronic devices 6:- I cannot recommend it at all for toddlers. We travel a lot and our son has experienced a lot but this place was just not safe and good for kids. He scratched his back on the wooden frame of the bed badly. He screamed taking showers there (and he is a water boy), he was sweating at night time so bad and got bitten all over. 7:- We booked it based on 5 star review - now we see on our own experience it is 1 stars. I really don’t know what people like about this place. If you wanna experience nature, hike, take a tent and have 100% better spot than this place. Can’t recommend it for nobody and it’s way over priced for what you get. Food and sleeping wise.

The owner is very nice and tries the best to fill the requirements. Nice wild experience. The bed size is large.

It was not comfortable when all tent windows were closed. No BBQ, only Sri Lanka food for dinner. No socket for device charging or hair dryer.

Lovely father and sun running this camp. The dinner was amazing and the hospitality is next level.

The lack of light and Wi-Fi wasn’t suitable for me since I had the misfortune of the safari being cancelled due to heavy rain.

It was in the jungle. The staff were great. Walk in the afternoon was lovely.

It is 20 minutes up a very bumpy dirt track. Impossible for normal transport to get there. We did get there eventually after a lot of stress!

When I booked there weren't a lot of reviews but all of the reviews were fantastic so I assumed that it was just newer and didn't have a lot of reviews. This was one of the only times that I felt let down by booking.com reviews. The staff at the place was very warm but there were more negatives about the property than positives.

Where to begin - the tent itself needed some attention - some of the screens were torn, there was no way to keep the door shut to the tent without putting a chair in front of it. The bathroom door was warped and didn't close and at night there were a large number of black ants that came into the bathroom itself due to the fact that nothing was sealed tight from the outside. The shower itself was outside and I kid you not - there was no door or privacy at all from the shower to the path. I did not shower here as I didn't feel comfortable at all with the possibility of people walking by and seeing me naked. There were zero electrical outlets so bring a fully charged charging block if you need to charge anything. In the correspondence with the camp I mentioned that we were arriving in tuk tuk they said great way to see the country. When we were attempting to get here the roads got really bad. Called them and they said it wasn't passable via tuk tuk - this is fine but why not tell me upfront and put me in a situation where we could have gotten stuck in mud? The food in the photos looked great but wasn't what we experienced the first night - we paid $25 USD for fried rice and a few pieces of chicken. The next day we did a vegetarian meal which was much better but was still confused. In the reviews it says cashless property but this isn't true - we had to pay in cash & it is very remote so make sure that you bring plenty with you. This was the most expensive property we stayed at in Sri Lanka and the most disappointing.
