We stayed at Temae Beach House Bungalow for four nights and it was, quite simply, the worst place we have ever stayed in. We have lived in New Zealand over forty years and travelled extensively, and we are not difficult guests — we are happy to help out, follow house rules, and adapt. This was on a different level entirely. The host (Nick) was noticeably warmer with the French-speaking guests and made very little effort with us. We tried repeatedly to break the ice with compliments about the house and the garden, but the response was underwhelming. His employee was just as short and rude to me when I tried to ask questions. The bungalow itself is much smaller than the photographs suggest and sits detached from the main house, with no bathroom. Every visit to the toilet, including in the night, meant walking across the garden to the main house. The stepping stone at the bungalow entrance is loose and wobbly, which was genuinely worrying for my husband, who is not steady on his feet. The house sits directly on the main road to the airport, so the noise from the airport shuttles and supply vehicles is constant. While the bungalow does include a small safe, the bungalow itself cannot be locked, which was concerning for us travelling with valuable equipment and personal items. We asked on every one of the four nights whether we could be moved into the main house and were told each time that there was no availability. We were given one towel each for the entire four-night stay. The same single towel had to do for the bathroom and for the beach. Apart from fresh good coffee, the continental breakfast advertised on the listing never appeared — we ended up buying our own each morning. The reviews online describe a very different property to the one we stayed in. We can only assume that the warmth of the welcome here depends very much on which language you speak. We would not return, and we would urge anyone hoping for a relaxed and welcoming stay to look elsewhere.
