Lack of air conditioning

One of the few rentable accommodations in Fourkovouni village, a beautiful, tranquil and isolated fishing village. Very well equipped, sitting on the water with almost private access to the beach. Natalia, the owner, was also extremely hospitable and helpful.

(1) The beautiful sea view. (2) The picturesque environment. (3) The tranquil beach and swimming area below the property. (4) The proximity to Platheina, a high-quality organized beach. (5) The good wifi. (6) The comfortable bed. (6) The responsiveness of Natalia on matters related to check in and check out. (7) Natalia provided the full-length mirror we requested before arriving.

(1) The unsatisfactory resolution of an issue that occurred on check-out day. At ~5:20 am, we were awoken by a horrible stench permeating the property. It smelled like sewer gas and was so bad that we had to vacate the premises for over 1 hour. The smell was localized in and around the property; it wasn’t everywhere. I believe I located the likely source of the odor – the white vent near the front door (see photo). Whatever the source of the odor, our negative experience was what it was. Upon checking out I reached out to Natalia seeking a partial refund (25%) as compensation and she said she would look into it. After over 2 weeks of back and forth, Natalia told me no refund would be forthcoming. So, I contacted booking.com. After a cumulative 71 minutes on the phone with them over 5 days, booking.com offered me a 15% refund. I accepted this, but cannot say I view this issue as satisfactorily resolved. The fumes could have been toxic for all we know. Other things I didn’t like: (2) The restrictive policy of no refund being issued in the event of a cancellation. While this policy is clearly indicated in the listing, it struck me as excessively inflexible, especially given the high price of €420 per night. Indeed, shortly after making this reservation, an issue arose that made me want to cancel this reservation. As this was over six weeks before my visit, I was hoping some accommodation could be made, but Natalia held firm to the stated policy. I didn’t cancel. (3) The lack of air conditioning; there was only a ceiling fan. While the listing didn’t mention air conditioning, I think its absence should have been made explicit for full awareness. (4) The lack of a full-height wardrobe or garment rack; while the listing indicates “Wardrobe or closet”, there was only a half-height garment rack (see photo). (5) The lack of an overhead shower head mount. (6) The bathroom sink was not firmly mounted. (7) Parking was tight and necessitated backing up a steep slope.

Location, location, location! This type of property, a traditional syrma house, was such an authentic experience on one of the most beautiful islands of Greece! We were lucky enough to spend 4 nights enjoying the most gorgeous sunsets with the hypnotic lapping of the ocean all night, it was truly a dream. We visited many fisherman villages around the island & loved the sandy beach below our unit where I picked up frosty sea glass each morning with coffee. Our lovely, gracious & most personable host Natalia has remodeled this property to provide for every amenity you can need in such a cozy space. She met us at the port where we collected our car, necessary for this area, then grabbed a quick bite before she led us to the property. I’d say we are more independent adventurous travelers & I’d highly recommend this stay to anyone with great mobility as it is very hilly with uneven sidewalks, consider your balance & stamina. If you are up to it, you are in for the treat of a lifetime!!

The location is amazing! Casa del Mar is just above the sea, you go to bed and wake up with the sound of the waves. It is beautifully decorated, with good taste and quality that can be noticed in every single detail. Natalia is a wonderful person and host, always available for our questions or requests. She welcomed us with wine, fruits, cold water. You find olive oil, coffee and all you may need upon arrival at the house. Plathiena beach, one of the most beautiful beaches on the island, is at 10-15 minutes walk away. Don't miss Krikri bar in Plaka where they play live music and serve an excellent draft beer. We travelled light, so our rented motor scooter was enough to reach Casa del mar with all our baggages, but you need to rent a car/scooter to move around. Quiet nights at Casa del Mar sirma house, under the stars and the moon and joined only by the sound of the sea, are priceless.
