"Comfortable Holiday Home directly on the Lake"

10.0

Comfortable Caravan with good size main double bedroom located on the best position on this friendly park directly on the Lake

This caravan is a little older than some rentals on this park so it is not quite as modern but it is perfectly comfortable

"Disappointing start but got better!"

7.0

Accommodation - the caravan is situated at the far end of the site. The cutlery looked new but we couldn't see a tin opener, grater or veg peeler so suggest bringing your own if you think you'll need them. Hand soap, washing up liquid, tea towel and cloths helpfully provided. Once we got the hot water on, the shower was really great! A couple of small stains on the bedding but the duvets were nice and soft. The beds themselves were very soft; not great for my back but I'm sure others will enjoy this! Site itself - the location is nice; the staff, security and residents were very friendly and the bar was clean and bright. The small lake was pleasant and a few folks were fishing there. Wi-fi - there is public wi-fi available on site but it's unusable at the accommodation. Noise - we went in early May so it was peaceful. The traffic from the A133 was a low hum and the nearby train line wasn't much of a distraction. The geese at 5.30am on the first morning were a different story! Location - it was 20 mins drive to beautiful beaches at Frinton and Walton-on-the-Naze, 45 mins to Landguard and about 30 mins to Colchester City centre. Castle Park is beautiful and Putt in the Park adventure golf was fun (recommend booking online to get 10% off!). Overall a nice stay, but for the same price we had stayed somewhere slightly better so perhaps we'd set our sights a bit high. It is perfectly fine for a getaway break.

Unfortunately we weren't given much info to be able to find it and there was no answer to the phone number we had been provided with so we wandered around in the dark for ages and finally found a security officer who provided a map. In the booking info we were told 'Your designated parking space is in front of the caravan' but there is no parking directly outside. Parking is free on site though. According to a resident you can drive up to offload but then parking has to be in the bays. We just parked in a bay and walked the short distance to the caravan across a tiny bridge and past another caravan. There was no information in the caravan to explain how to put the hot water or heating on. We muddled through and made it work but it would have been helpful to provide this. On the first night the lights in the caravan blew so the bedrooms were in darkness and the carbon monoxide monitor had been left on the side with the battery out. Neither of these were reassuring but someone came the following morning to resolve the issues. The following morning the heating didn't come on and it turned out to be low gas. The host phoned to talk us through how to change the bottle (which was very easy to do). These things happen but again it would have been helpful to provide this info. No information about recycling on site so we took ours home.
