"Quirky, but full of character"

10.0

The staff were incredibly welcoming, attentive, and cheerful. The bed was amazingly comfortable, and it was such a lovely touch that the heating was already on when we arrived. Breakfast was simple but satisfying—just what we needed.

There was nothing we didn’t like. You could tell the property is under new management and has lots of potential, which only added to its charm and character. For the price, it was great value and we would happily stay again.

"Stinking, cold, filthy almost derelict excuse for a hotel! Disgusting"

1.0

Just the humour due to the fact this is open and advertised as a hotel and the surrounding area is beautiful.

It has no heating apart from a noisy electric heat fan mounted on the wall of our room. The place is run down, stinks of damp, is filthy and cold. There is no hot water, I ran the taps for ten minutes they were ice cold. I made the host aware and he replied to me the day after we left claiming the water was hot and I should have ran the taps longer. I checked previous reviews and found the heating and hot water have apparently been turned off by the owners. Easily the worst excuse for a hotel I have ever stayed at.

"I was pleasantly surprised by my experience and will stay again when I am in the area."

8.0

I booked this hotel as it was by far the closest to my work visit the following morning, then I read the reviews and I was a bit worried! However, I can confirm that the Hotel is indeed open and has recently has some upgrades by the sound of it from looking at the reviews. To answer some questions relating to the reviews; 1. The door was locked when I arrived, but there was clearly a doorbell and a mobile number to alert the owner. He had also called me earlier in the day to confirm. 2. There have been new heaters installed in the rooms and the guest corridors. My room was lovely and warm. Yes, there is central heating that is turned off, which I fully understand with an under-utilised hotel, it would not be financially viable to do so. 3. There was plenty of hot water and the en-suite was clean and fine. The decor of the room was modern and there was no damp smell in the room. 4. The bedding was clean and fresh and I had a very comfortable nights sleep, despite the horrid wet weather outside. 5. Breakfast was continental. There were few guests staying but I still had a range of juices, toast and jams, croissant, cereal and hot drinks. It was absolutely fine. This is a fascinating Hotel and it has obviously changed ownership a few times recently (have a look on Google Street View over the years!) and with the closure of the adjoining petrol station (recently used for the filming of 28 years later, I now know) and Covid-19, it does not appear to have really been modernised and is in need of investment, but with low guest numbers, how can it be invested in. Hopefully the petrol station will be replaced with a bigger service station (I hear there are plans) which in turn will bring more guests to the Hotel, once more. It is in a fantastic setting and really does offer a decent place to stay for the budget and the owner is very friendly too. We need to support independent Hotels such as this one.

Everything met my expectations and I am glad that the Hotel is now under new ownership (again) and that some investment has been made in terms of heating, comfort and breakfast. It is a shame that a previous owner painted the lovely stone at the front of the building and that the closed petrol station adjoining the Hotel does give the site a run down appearance. I dearly hope that the Service Station is re-opened and that you are able to continue to refurbish the Hotel.
