I booked a room at Melayu Villa, which is in a good location. The room was nice and large, but the windows all had shutters which you could not keep opened - they fell shut. But there was no glass in the windows so if it had been possible to keep them open, the air-conditioning would not have worked. I asked to be moved to a different room, that also had a private bath, but there was nothing available. Instead, I was offered a room at a different property: Chowrasta 17. This was done very nicely and efficiently, which I appreciated. So my review is actually more of that property. It is located directly across a narrow street from the wet market, and every morning the street below has an outdoor market. The room itself was large and pleasant with cross ventilation, and I liked the location. It was lively, but not unduly loud. Two bus stops for the free city bus as well as other buses were very nearby. The room is in a shop house and occupies the upper story. You need to climb a fairly steep stairway to get to it.

At the Melayu Villa there is always someone in the shop on the ground floor to ask questions of during the day. At Chowrasta you are on your own, though they did make contact to see if all was OK.

The property was conveniently located within short walking distance to most places of interest. The bed was comfy and the room was spacious. Communication with staff was exceptionally quick and efficient, and when a small issue arose, they addressed it right away. They were also very helpful with suggestions about activities, and this was appreciated as well. Clearly, they care about treating guests with warmth and responsiveness, which is key.

It would go a long way if more deliberation went into how the room is designed and outfitted. Most significantly, the level of privacy in the room was affected by noise travelling from outside and vice-versa. The bathroom window shutters and a section of the wall/ceiling near the doorway were basically open to the hallway and downstairs common area. It's simply not great when others can hear your toilet-related activities. With some basic consideration, other lesser issues could be easily avoided as well: a table was missing a screw and wobbly; a lamp had a very harsh white light and so was better left unused, there were only two clothing hangers on the rack -- just one per person, a shower floor mat and even just a hand towel were nowhere to be seen -- hotel basics that should be there. And if someone had tested it, they would have realized the wifi connection is sometimes weak and it would be beneficial to set up a signal extender.

Really well received ,friendly ,warm and welcoming staff. Relaxed atmosphere. Fridge , hot n cold water, microwave. Silent huge bedrooms , unpretentious and respectful of the heritage. Really good taste. Everything worked perfectly , beds comfortable very silent room .

Het appartement is heel ruim en minimalistisch, dat maakt het een fijne plek om terug te trekken na een dag wandelen door de stad. Alles is goed per voet bereikbaar.

Ik miste een koelkastje op de kamer maar beneden in de centrale ruimte was er een koelkast om te dele. Het pand is historisch en heeft daardoor zijn charme, hierdoor kan het wel gehorig zijn hoewel ik er zelf geen hinder van ondervond, maar oordopjes worden aangeboden.
