The photos show the condition of the apartment upon arrival. We moved out after just one damp, cold, noisy, and sleepless night due to serious safety concerns. Issues encountered included: • A strong gas smell whenever hot water was used • Exposed and hanging boiler cables • A large crack in a living-room glass window, which was not disclosed beforehand • A front door that barely opened, requiring us to enter sideways and making it difficult to bring in luggage • Bathroom and bedroom doors that did not close or lock • Old, rusty locks and keys • Ongoing construction noise in the building throughout the day, also not disclosed Key collection details were only provided after booking. The apartment key was stored in a lockbox hanging from a tree by the roadside. A second lockbox for the garage remote did not work; after repeated calls, someone was eventually sent but could not resolve the issue. We ultimately fixed it ourselves after significant effort, as the code had been changed. Beyond these specific problems, we were shocked by the overall run-down condition of the apartment, garage, access areas, and surroundings. The level of cleanliness and quality was far below what we consider acceptable for a Booking.com listing. We reported these issues immediately and requested a refund for the unused nights, as the property’s condition was clearly misrepresented. The owners dismissed our concerns as “normal for Portuguese standards.” I am Portuguese, and none of what we encountered is normal — it reflects neglect, not local standards. The owners refused any refund. Booking.com was equally unhelpful: we were offered only a token voucher of around 10 Euro. Beware of “non-refundable” listings. Booking.com appears willing to advertise hostel-level properties without adequate disclosure or meaningful recourse when serious issues arise.
