Lavender house near Napa and San Francisco

RENTER BEWARE! Upon arrival on NEW YEARS EVE, we immediately smelled heavy cigarette smoke. There were 3 windows left open and 5 Glade plugins to cover the smell. The property is advertised as a SMOKE-FREE PROPERTY. The house was freezing. Turns out the thermostat was not working and there was NO POWER to the furnace. The thermostat clearly showed an error. It was 54 degrees inside. Upon contacting the owner via phone, he insisted that we just needed to follow the directions that we received in our booking correspondence. We had. He told me that he’d text me the directions and hung up. They were the same directions that we had already followed - but we tried again. The owner then proceeded to ignore our calls and texts. I let him know that we were not ok with the cigarette smoke nor the freezing house. He finally replied that he’d send someone over between 7:30-8:30pm to fix it. This was on NEW YEARS EVE. There was no way that the house would heat up enough. And the house smelled horrible. I informed him that we would be leaving and expected an immediate refund. We never even unpacked. He texted to leave everything as we found it. To this day, I am still fighting to get my refund. The owner is denying the refund. Booking is the middleman and really seems to have their hands tied. It is the discretion of the owner to determine if you get a refund. He was unresponsive to us…so why does he get to make this decision. This owner is still able to rent his property on booking. How is this ok? We had families visiting from 3 states who slept on my brother’s floors for 2 nights. Luckily he had floor space.
