High Tor House

Home away from home! Everything you could need in a comfortable, modern, spacious holiday home. Spotlessly clean. Most beautiful view with the perfect location to explore the island from.

The house is superbly appointed to make the most of the fabulous views and was great for spotting both marine and bird life. The trees and shrubs provide a haven for wildlife, as well as privacy and shelter from the winds when using the outside seating/lounging areas. The house is spacious, warm, and comfortable for chilling indoors, and the heating was easily adjustable to meet personal preference. We got the best sleep out of our three weeks of taking properties across the outer hebrides, with the wonderfully comfortable mattress and good quality linen. It was also really helpful to have both a washing machine and dryer as it made laundering clothes much easier. Whilst we had stayed on Bernera in another house, this would easily have made an excellent base to have visited Lewis, Bernera, and Harris. We look forward to returning one day and would probably take this as our one base, and for longer!

Apart from only having one week at the property, our only thing we didn't like was access to the property. The house is accessed on the brow of a hill, which is obviously unavoidable, but there is no warning of a concealed entrance, no angled mirror on the opposite bank, and the bush at the entrance also obscures the view of the road (just needs a little more trimmed off but it would be a shame to lose it in it's entirety, as it probably helps with the noise from the traffic). Vehicles drive past very fast, and the road is busy at certain periods of the day and evening. This can make exiting and returning to the property daunting. It felt a risk each time. We really appreciated the welcome hamper (thank you), but it was a little disappointing in a luxury property not to have the local toiletries and scents around the house (could not decipher if the handwash in the bathroom was or wasn't). Most people, probably like us, have their own items with them, but having the ability to try local products encourages us visitors to buy locally for gifts etc, so I'm mentioning this only as a helpful suggestion.

Lovely house, great views, excellent location - fairly central so easy to cover the whole of the island (and handy for our ferry).

Absolutely everything! The house was beautiful, in an excellent location with amazing views. Very clean and well equipped. We had a fantastic stay, will definitely be back.

Spectacular location overlooking the islands in the bay entry to Tarbert harbour, with a sun terrace and easy access by car to the rest of Harris and Scalpay. The house feels comfortable, spacious, even swanky, and we really enjoyed our evenings in next to the enormous windows over the decking. Margaret who lives locally was responsive and helpful in the run-up, answering my questions promptly. The kitchen has good quality facilities, crockery and dishwasher. There is a washer and a tumble dryer in the separate utility room, so you don't waste time on chores. The beds are comfortable and the house is tremendously peaceful.

The only improvements would be to add a few extra kitchen supplies: a few more saucepans, tall drinking glasses and perhaps a larger quantity of consumables such as dishwasher tabs, and toilet rolls; we bought extras of these. We found the wifi signal was quite weak but were able to use our phone data instead.
