"Excellent Location for Union Square, Bus, Rail and Northlink"

8.0

The apartment is in an excellent location for the Northlink ferry terminal, bus station, railway station and Aberdeen Union Square complex with shops, cinemas and eateries (there's also a very good Indian restaurant about 50 metres away). It's fairly compact, however the host has worked hard to fit everything in to the available space and done a good job. The kitchen is well equipped and has everything you need for a short stay, including a fridge with small freezer compartment, washing machine with dryer, four hob cooker and oven / grill. The bathroom is fairly spacious with a good shower, and there's plenty hot water via an on-demand gas boiler. We didn't need the heating during our stay as the weather was warm, thankfully the windows open for plenty fresh air. There's lots of storage space and plenty room for suitcases, etc. The bed is comfortable, but - see below! The wi-fi is very fast and the 40" TV has all the Freeview channels plus ChromeCast so you can stream via your phone or tablet. The apartment is remarkably quiet for a city centre location, thanks mainly to it being at the rear of the property away from the main road. We didn't have a car so can't comment on the parking, however a great plus point for the location is it lies just outside Aberdeen's Low Emission Zone. If you're coming down from Shetland or Orkney with an older or non-compliant vehicle you don't have to enter the LEZ to get to the property. Entry was via a key box and the host messaged the code on the day of arrival, no issues there at all. I would definitely recommend this property for a stay in Aberdeen, however it may not be suited for older or disabled travellers.

The apartment is on the 4th floor. Although the stairs are wide and not too steep this may be an issue for disabled travellers like myself (however I did manage them OK). The biggest issue for me was the bed which sits up on a plywood frame about 5 feet above the floor. There are steps up at the foot of the bed for access, and a small shelf on the inside to use as a bedside table, however the outside of the bed drops straight to the floor with nowhere to put anything like spectacles or a cop of tea. This won't be a problem for many, however I did find it a bit of a struggle. My review would have been a 9 if the bed had been at normal height, or even slightly raised up with room for storage below. Not really a negative but there's a few furniture items that don't really need to be there and would give a bit more room if they were removed (a 3-tier plant stand springs to mind).
