USThe location of the house is great, and we loved being able to walk on the beach and see all the many murals. The house itself is older, showing its age, and the listing hasn't been updated to match reality. For example, a foldout sofa was shown (which we'd hoped to use), and it was not there. Our main problem with the property was bad communications with the owner, as we showed up and had been given no info on how to get into the (not cleaned) house.
We arrived at the house and could not get in. Background: Our check-in time was 3pm, but I had not seen any host communication in five months. So I sent a message at 8am that day asking if we needed any specific check-in info. After a day in driving up to Hellissandur, we arrived at 5:30pm, and had still received no check-in info. I tried to call the owner (twice), and sent multiple messages via booking.com's website, with zero success on all fronts. Eventually the owner called me -- "who is this?" -- and seemed surprised/confused that we were there. I never did get an explanation (or apology) for what went wrong, although she did say it was her fault. She told me the lockbox code verbally, but said the house had not been cleaned, and she wasn't sure if she could reach the cleaner that night. Fortunately, the cleaner did eventually show up, and by 8pm we were settled into a clean house. Checking booking.com reviews (after the fact), I saw something similar has happened at least three other times with this property. The initial lack of communication was obviously bad, but then I received no followup messages or communications or apologies from the owner. When I reached out to Booking.com, they replied that they also couldn't reach them. It was a very unfortunate start to our time there in Hellissandur, and is the primary reason I have given this property a low rating. If you plan to rent this house: read (and translate) all the reviews! I would also send multiple messages prior to arrival to ensure that the house will be ready.
ALSuch a lovely little house, full of character and beautifully decorated. Plenty of space for 4 people and a great base on Snæfellsnes. Loved it.

Cold, smelly little house, bedding wasn't clean

CAIt was nice and sunny in the morning, lots of windows. Walking distance to the ocean & lots of games to play with well equipped kitchen.
- no window coverings upstairs or on door in basement - hair in bath tub & sink - crumbs on floor - host changed lockbox code without notifying us so took 30mins to get a hold of them to obtain new code - overpriced for the town & state of the home - stairs are not suitable for children or anyone with mobility issues (very steep, lack depth)
CZBeautiful house, with great views around the area, easy to find, great for a family of 4, within 10 mins you find a shop and petrol station, cafe within walking distance, quiet surroundings.
