ZAWe had an incredible time at the Skooltjie Cottage. The peace and quiet and direct access to nature is lovely. Having a braai under the Karoo stars was truly special. Great opportunity for hikes and bird-watching.

GBPerfect! Skooltjie Cottage aka ‘Tankwa Getaway’ is a unique property and perfect for hiking, birding or just to get away from it all. Hanlie and Thys were fabulous hosts, and made us so very welcome. Their generosity and kind nature was so appreciated, staying so far from home.
ZAThe cottage is 20km off the main tar road to Sutherland and is the most perfect out-of-the-city getaway. The hosts are so sweet and the cottage itself was so comfortable. The accommodation was so well equipped and clean and cosy. My partner and I will for sure be returning to this accommodation, maybe even as an annual excursion! Our hosts were very caring and gave us lots of tips on things to do in the area including names and numbers for local tour guides at points of interest and activities in Sutherland.
We were thoroughly unprepared for the road to get there - the +-20km dirt road from the main tar road to Sutherland is definitely not sedan friendly, although our low-hung Mitsubishi Lancer with low-profile tires made it, despite one no-go river crossing and very much mud. After or during snow this road would be impossible in our car though. Our hosts made sure to check in with us whenever we left the accommodation to make sure we didn't get stuck anywhere - this was really comforting.
