Exceptionally noisy on both nights: bins in the locality being filled after midnight & emptied from 4am; and revellers noisy in the locality during the night. The fire escape for our floor (5 bedrooms) was through our room meaning an access key to our room was outside our door leaving us feeling insecure - we were not informed of this before or on arrival at the hotel. Grubby bedroom carpet.

Location is fantastic, close to everything and so walkable. Easy from the train to find. The breakfast is amazing. Made to order hot food and lovely pastries. We had one of the herb named rooms in the back with a lovely outdoor area and room was so cute. The staff were very helpful.

On a warm sunny week in York, this hotel is at the center of town activity. The outdoor patio restaurant is full at all times, a lovely place to be--and the food is a cut above the standard pub menus. It's a walkable distance to all city sights and also to the train station, just outside the congested area nearer to the cathedral. The hotel is beautifully decorated to reflect the building's history. Breakfast is outstanding.

There are several flights of stairs up to the character rooms, something to consider. As in older buildings, there also is no air conditioning. During the hot days we were there, a fan was provided in the room, which worked well, and all windows were left open.

The location was great. The bed was extremely comfortable. The breakfast was tremendous.

There are only quirky and uneven staircases. There are no fridges in the rooms.
