Ranchos de Chalia Panama

We had an enjoyable time in this hotel, a little away from Portobelo, but we chose this place to live a quiet moment in the nature. The hotel was close to the places where the boats leave to go to the islands. The hosts were very friendly and we enjoyed our meals there as well.

Unfortunately during our stay, there were a lot of parties in the closest city and we couldn’t sleep two nights in a row. It seems that this has been a recurring issue in the area, lately.

We had some issues with the bathroom in our first room. After reporting on the next morning we got a new room immediately. Everything was fine there, it was even bigger, so kind of a free upgrade. The location is very nice. The staff was very very very friendly and nice.

The large area of the property is wonderful for those who want to watch nature and simply relax. The quantity of animals/birds is amazing. In less than 24 hours, just sitting for breakfast or walking around I saw sloths (one of them with a baby), small monkeys, more than a dozen birs species (some of them new to me) and watched several large birds (including mackaws) fly by.

Charmant place, very quiet and beautiful Pool. Close to the boats to get to the islands and Portobello. The stuff was really nice and made us feel special. They even do some cheese by themselves. Very good indeed.

Rooms can be a bit bigger but it was fine.

Friendly & helpful staff who were always working to keep the grounds pristine, and are always available to serve food and drinks. Beautiful pool and view over the Caribbean. Only a short walk to the shore where private boats transport you to the beaches

They did not forewarn us that they only accept cash to pay for the food bill when checking out, and there’s no banks around. Mattress in room 2 is too soft & slumps in the middle. People should be warned that you must walk up a very steep hill from the parking location, and depending on your room location, have to climb multiple stairs

Location was lovely, at multiple levels overlooking the bay. It felt like you were away from it all. Nature at its best seeing humming birds, parrots, and many other birds in their natural environment (and feeders for the humming birds). Even had a treat when the host showed us a nest of hummingbirds that we would have walked straight past.

It needs some sort of sign from the road, even if just saying 'hotel' as we went past it three times before being directed to it (after much debate from a shop only 100m away) ... and we were still unsure until we asked the hosts.

Hosts were amazing, so friendly and spent time with us showing us the animals on the property. Very clean and decent food. Very peaceful stay and located close to isla mamey and isla grande. The historic port of portobelo was close by and interesting to visit. Overall a great stay off the beaten path

Everything was great as long as you accept this is a rural remote location
