"Great stay!"

Great one night stay! Beautiful place, away from everything very quiet and relaxing, cannot beat the value. Will consider in the future for a weekend getaway.

"Caution: do not be fooled by superficial beauty, what occurs here is unprofessional and traumatizing"

1.0

The location in the Virginia piedmont is bucolic, the historic main house is lovely, and breakfasts are hearty. However, that is where the charm ends!

Safety: I was left completely alone in the Inn for the last two nights of my stay. I am an older woman traveling alone, and expressed concern for my safety to the Innkeeper (Andrea) but she did not reply until the next morning (too little too late!). For two nights, back before sunset, I checked every room in the Inn for intruders, then sat up in the living room so I could watch both the front and rear doors, wit my car keys in hand in case I had to quickly escape (!). On the final night, I was in the Butler's Pantry, when the rear door swung open and a scruffily dressed man burst in. I screamed, absolutely terrified. It was the groundskeeper (property manager? David) saying he had to turn on the porch lights (I was never given notice of this). I shook and cried for 30 minutes. He said I should move to another hotel (at 10pm at night, in the dark - I have to pack up and move out?). I asked him to lock the doors and he agreed, but scolding me and bragging they had "never" been locked for 25 years (the whole county knows that!). I have never been so traumatized and unsafe during a hotel stay. I shared all this with friends and they described it as "outrageous". Completely unprofessional from a management/liability point of view: a guest alone could be assaulted, or slip and fall, and no one would know. Conversely a guest could "make off with the silver". Staff: live on site and behave as though they own the place (they brag that the Marriott family vacations here (family photos cover the walls). The staff are largely non-responsive to guests, often asking guests to do their tasks. The maids show up at 3/4pm just as guests have returned from a busy day wanting their room available.
