Exotic Garden cottage at amazing volcano fissure

We loved listening to the forest sounds at night, and using the open-air shower in the morning. The light path at night was very useful.

It is a very unique place to stay. Completely off the grid, private and beautiful. Only 20 minutes to the entrance of volcano national park! Ben was kind and helpful in getting the WiFi working. This place has a very outdoorsy vibe to it so that must be your jam.

Exactly as the pictures and description. It was like a beautiful fairy garden. Very much like a real-life Garden of Eden.

Location is very remote, and thus quiet -- except for the birds and other creatures. Great stop on way to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Incredibly beautiful grounds. Very private. Owners are responsive and very friendly.

The building has 4 walls and a roof, a sliding glass door, but screens-only on 2 sides--making it an open-air experience. Hard to stay warm when weather is occasionally cool at night. Linked directions are to Booking.com, which does not provide real-time turn-and-distance instructions. Street signs are not marked and/or not lit, making it difficult at night. I passed the final turn several times before narrowing it down. Best to paste the address into Google, and rely on owner's comments as you make the final turn.

The hosts were very friendly, and the rental is located near Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

Overall, this was not a great experience. First off, we did not receive the site we booked. Apparently, the place we reserved was somehow double-booked, and our hosts had no clue that this had occurred until after we arrived. The hosts/owners of the property were very friendly, but they were absolutely clueless and not at all prepared or equipped to host rental sites. The site we ended up being placed in was a “new build”, for which the hosts were still in the process of turning on the electricity as we walked up. Unfortunately, the electricity only partially worked, as most of the lights outside shut off soon after we settled in. Our original booking (the one we did not get to stay in) had a stove, while this one did not. The hosts brought us a — rather filthy — microwave and instructed us to turn off the mini-fridge before using it, because the power grid could not handle both simultaneously. Possibly the most disturbing aspect of our stay was the running water (in both the sinks and toilet), which smelled strongly of sewage. We alerted our hosts, who told us that the water just needed to be “flushed out and bleached” with “food-grade sanitizing bleach”, assuring us that the water only stank because it had sat in the pipes for too long. This wasn’t reassuring. After they bleached the water, we were instructed to let it run for a bit to flush it out. However, when the water began to foam (likely from the “food grade bleach”), we decided we weren’t comfortable putting it in our mouths or on our bodies. Unfortunately, this meant we had to go to the store to buy a case of water to use. Additionally, the “indoor” part of our rental, containing the bed and mini fridge (the toilet and shower are outdoors), had clearly not been vacuumed or cleaned at all before we arrived. Everything was covered in dirt/debris, gnats, bugs, etc., including — somehow — the inside layers of the bedsheets.

This is an incredibly special place. It looks just like the pictures. Nestled in the hawaiin rain forest with beautiful foliage all around. I also had the pleasure of meeting the owners who were exceptionally kind. It's clean quiet and off the beaten path.

It is easy to pass the parking area if you don't read the directions before you head out. There is cell reception and the owners are very responsive if so.

This place is so magical it’s like being in a fairies garden! The place is private and tucked away, at night time it is illuminated by hundreds of fairy lights and you can see the Milky Way above and listen to the thousands of little frogs and geckos- it was like being in another world. We will definitely be coming back!

Nothing, we liked everything about it! It is more of an outdoorsy feel though so keep that in mind.

Beautiful garden site. If you are into bromeliads, this is the place for you. Everything that you need. Very pretty!!
