La Rupe Apartments Tropea

The place has a special vibe. We had a gorgeous, spacious apartment with a beautiful view. (Actually, I am writing a review of a 3-bedroom apartment, which we were provided instead of the ordered one.) There were 2 bathrooms with toilets upstairs and downstairs. It is true, that the kitchenette is simply equiped, but coffee maker was fine, there were even the coffee capsules. Great location on a quite square, but very short walking distance to more busy streets. Stairs to the Rotonda Beach just at the end of the square. At the time of our stay there was no noisy restaurant bellow the windows. Tropea is a small town, so it is easy to get everywhere on foot, including the train station.

Not a big deal - wine glasses would be nice. And some basic stuff for cooking, like oil or salt. However, guests are asked to thow everything away before chech out. I understand why, it makes it cleaner and safer.

Once we figured out how to get there we liked with the location. Tropea is a small, walkable town so we could get to the apartment quickly from anywhere in the old town. There was a nice view from the window in the living area. Water pressure was good in the shower and the bath towels were nice and big.

There are several apartments in La Rupe, and this review is only for the two-bedroom apartment #7 “Leucosia.” The building is inside a ZTL zone, so be ready to walk with your luggage over cobblestone streets from wherever you find parking. Parking was difficult all week, even in mid-October, with some spots paid from 9am-7pm. The apartment itself was sparsely decorated and lacked warmth. The bed and pillows were extremely uncomfortable. I had trouble sleeping the entire week due to the bed. There was an armoire in the main bedroom but the hanging bar was so high I couldn't reach it. The upstairs bathroom was awkward, with nowhere for toiletries and a toilet that was unusually high and ran every time you flushed. The shower was small but pressure was good, and the sink faucet didn’t work smoothly. The second bathroom downstairs was more functional and easier to use so our daughter used that one. Unfortunately, a few days before we left, the downstairs toilet began leaking and we had to deal with water on the floor for two days until we left. I understand that things happen, but the owner never even apologized for the inconvenience. There’s no oven, so reheating food means using the stove, which is not a good option for pizza or fried food. The air-conditioning didn’t cool the room well, so we needed fans every night, even though it was mild weather. The owner communicated by WhatsApp but was never there in person. Overall, the location is good, but parking is tough and the apartment could be much more comfortable.

The apartment is beautifully renovated, leaving some historic parts of the flat visible, such as a stone arch separating the mezzanine with the bed from the ground level floor. In addition, the apartment has a balcony with a stunning view of Tropea's ocean. The location is perfect as well - very central but also not right in the touristy and noisy city center. Basically right outside the door of the apartment are the stairs along the cliff leading to the port and adjacent beach of Tropea; another bonus point. During our stay, we had some issues and questions and the contact person managing the check in and check out etc. was very responsive.

We found the bed extremely uncomfortable and had back pain for several nights. We tried the sleeping couch on the ground floor, but that was even worse. Because of this, we decided to leave the apartment 2 days earlier and booked a different accommodation. In addition, the apartment was rather sparsely furnished and not cozy or comfortable. The sofa had stains and the kitchen sponges were apparently much used before and not replaced. We also had issues with hot water - this didn't work for multiple days or only at times and although we communicated the issues and it was said that a hydraulic will come to fix it, no one showed up before we left.
