Abrigo do Monte

We had a very unpleasant stay in Madeira due to serious issues with the property owner. Throughout our stay, we felt harassed and constantly monitored via CCTV cameras. Anna, who managed the property, entered the house multiple times without our knowledge, including accessing the rooms we were renting. She continuously reported our activities to the owner, who complained about nearly everything. After four days of ongoing harassment, we contacted Booking.com to cancel our stay. Booking.com was unable to reach the owner, who disappeared and only responded two hours after we had checked out on our departure day. At that point, she sent a letter containing complaints and false accusations against us. Anticipating this, I had taken photos of the property before leaving to document its condition and protect ourselves. Overall, this accommodation is highly overrated in every aspect: facilities, kitchen equipment, furniture, comfort, and especially the lack of privacy, and location. The property owner’s behavior is unacceptable. There is no real outdoor area where you can relax without being monitored by cameras, and the location is not as convenient or easily accessible in terms of hikes, the nearest town, supermarkets, restaurants or key attractions. I strongly advise against booking this accommodation.

Het huisje is gelegen op een dood lopende weg waardoor het hier heel rustig is. Je hebt mooi zicht op de oceaan. De host is gemakkelijk bereikbaar en helpt waar mogelijk! Het huisje is ook volledig uitgerust met alles wat je nodig hebt voor in de keuken.

Er ontbrak alleen een snijplankje in de keuken maar dit was opgelost met het gebruiken van een bord.

Emplacement un peu à l'écart des villes donc très tranquille mis à part un petit chien qui chappe presque continuellement. Les principales routes sont assez facilement accessibles pour les déplacements, ce qui nous a permis de nous balader sur toute l'île dans un délai raisonnable. La maison est relativement spacieuse bien que certaines pièces de celle-ci ne soit pas accessibles. La propriétaire était facilement joignable en cas de besoin. Nous avons eu des problèmes avec l'eau chaude et elle est venue rapidement le régler malgré l'heure tardive lors de notre arrivée. Seulement une chambre nous avait été préparée. La question ne nous avait pas été demandée explicitement pour savoir si nous étions un couple et n'avions besoin que d'une chambre, ce qui n'était pas le cas. La 2e chambre nous a été ouverte rapidement.

Malgré qu'il soit mentionné que le papier de toilette soit fourni, il n'y en avait qu'un seul rouleau (entamé) fourni. Arrivant en avion du Canada, nous n'avions pas prévu en apporter dans nos bagages bien sûr...Et comme ça ne se vend pas en rouleau unique, il nous a fallu en acheter un paquet de 4 et trouver la place dans notre valise pour rapporter les rouleaux inutilisés! Franchement, s'il est mentionné que c'est fourni, cela devrait l'être en fonction du nombre de personnes et de la duré du séjour. Si vous êtes 2 personnes, vous n'aurez que 2 couverts dans les armoires. Le code pour accéder à la clé n'est fourni que lors de l'arrivée donc assurez-vous d'avoir du réseau pour l'obtenir. Attention: il est mentionné dans certains commentaires qu'il y a 2 salles de bain alors qu'il n'y en a vraiment qu'une.

The place was well equipped, very clean and quite. Very close (50m) from levada Norte which we walked and run a few times.

There's not much to dislike. If you're an inexperienced driver, you might find the road climbing up to the house challenging

Ich habe eine Woche in der Ferienunterkunft verbracht und habe mich dort sehr wohl gefühlt. Die Gastgeberin war super freundlich und hat alle meine Fragen immer schnell beantwortet, sodass Check-in und Check-out ohne Probleme geklappt haben. Alle Räume waren sauber und ordentlich und mit allem ausgestattet, was man für die Selbstverpflegung braucht. Lediglich die Matratze fand ich anfangs etwas hart, habe mich aber nach ein paar Nächten daran gewöhnt. Die Lage der Wohnung am Berg ist auch toll, wenn man es wie ich eher etwas ruhiger mag. Trotzdem ist sie aber auch ein guter Ausgangspunkt für Ausflüge über die gesamte Insel. Ich kann die Unterkunft daher sehr empfehlen und komme gerne wieder, wenn ich noch einmal Urlaub auf Madeira mache!

Die Matratzen waren etwas hart und die Straße zum Haus ist sehr schmal und steil, aber man gewöhnt sich recht schnell daran. Für manche vielleicht etwas zu ruhig.

A really good property with an attentive owner. Be mindful it's a little out of the way from the likes of Funchal. That may be great for some folks. A car is necessary to get there. Very safe and secure. Great views to the coast. A personal residence so it's of a high standard and well equipped with everything needed for self catering.

WiFi a bit sketchy upstairs in the bedroom. Wooden floors and tiled floors are standard for this region, but make too much noise and echo for my personal preference, but I was only there to sleep and eat to be fair

The house is in a quiet, rural location with amazing views of the Atlantic. It is very clean inside and offers a lot of space for the price. The kitchen is well equipped. It has a parking space, which is a major asset in Madeira. The host is very nice and helpful.

It can get quite cold after the sun sets, at least in March. This was my first time staying in Madeira (or anywhere in that climate zone for that matter), so can't really say if this is the norm there – maybe I'm just used to Central European houses that are built to keep warmth in. The host does provide an electric heater, but of course that can only heat one room at a time. On the plus side, the duvet is thick and fluffy, so nights were comfortable.
