The property is a bit run down: I do understand we’re in the middle of the Baviaanskloof but it could have been much better. Also, a rating of 8.9 on booking was way too high even considering we’re talking about a guest house and not a five star hotel. We’ve lived in SA for 4 years and I’ve travelled all around the country by car and by motorbike: this was the worst place I’ve stayed at.
ZAZandvlakte's location is great and the owner Pieter was as welcoming and accommodating as always with our stays there. The gardens are beautiful and well-kept.
I book for groups and have to supply invoices for the individuals months in advance. The booking platform does not mention anything regarding meals, so for the first time I've had to book most of the group elsewhere, with only the overflow at Zandvlakte. The booking agent only mentioned the availability of meals a day before we arrived, by which time all arrangements were made long ago. There was also no hot water in the morning as nobody switched on the pump? Unfortunately Zanvlakte is no longer the value proposition it used to be - the food used to be the highlight of our many stays there.
