"Avoid this accommodation"

After numerous attempts to get hold of the owner regarding my booking and no acknowledgement of the initial booking made weeks before, I was informed by the owner nearly into the evening the day before my arrival that my booking would have to be cancelled as the Apartment was not clean. They wanted me to cancel it so I explained this would not be possible due to cancellation clauses, and it would have to be cancelled at their end. It is unconvincing that they have officially cancelled it and issued a refund nearly a week since as the booking is still showing and I have had no response from Booking.com to clarify matters.
