This hotel is just a short, cheap colectivo taxi ride from the bus station. It’s a few blocks from the main square and its impressive church, though there isn’t much else to do in town for tourists. To enter the building you need to ring the doorbell every time, which can be a bit inconvenient. There’s a communal kitchen and fridge available for guests, as well as a dining room. However, the kitchen could use a more thorough cleaning before I’d feel comfortable cooking there. There are two pleasant open-air sitting areas on the 2nd and 3rd floors, with nice mountain views from the 3rd floor. Be aware that none of the rooms actually have mountain views, despite what the booking.com description says — and some rooms don’t even have windows. When we arrived, we were given a room without a window. I asked to change, but they weren’t able to move us until the following day. If I stayed here again, it would only be if I could book a room with a window. The stairs to the upper floors are quite steep, and there’s some noise from traffic outside. Overall, it’s a decent budget choice as long as you manage to get a room with natural light.

We loved Casa Brenes! Wonderful location close to the cathedral. Great hospitality and delicious breakfast. Lovely rooms with fans. The best thing was the cozy big decks on the second and third floors overlooking the mountains, with egrets, parakeets and other birds flying by!

Walk a few blocks to Central Park. Very clean and staff attentive and friendly.

The location was right in Matagalpa.It was incredibly clean and the owner and host were extremely kind.
