BLACK ROCK ACCOMMODATION

We were greeted by friendly hosts and a very warm welcome to the breathtaking accommodation! One of the best holidays I've had on the Wild coast!

Keeping in mind you are in the ruralest of rural Transkei, the house is functional and modern and sticks out from the surroundings. The house is perched atop a beach which, with no other houses around, can be classified as private. There is a braai facility and a complimentary wood bundle. Each room is an en-suite, offering enhanced privacy. Although most restaurants are in Coffee Bay, about 7km away, there is a restaurant near the house at the Hole in the Wall Resort that offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner. However, if you wish to cook or braai, there is a fully equipped kitchen. The sound of the ocean at night is calming as is the isolation and lack of any noise pollution. The owner was also lovely and stayed in contact with us throughout the stay with important info like load shedding schedules.

It can get a bit hot in summer, and there's no aircon. There was 1 fan which we used for one bedroom, but it would be good if there were 2, so the other room had some circulation too, as leaving the windows open at night can attract some unwanted insects. Be aware that houses in the area rely on electric-powered water pumps, so load shedding means no water for the duration of the power outage. The location of the house is also a bit confusing for Google Maps. You still need to drive across an unmarked grassy area off the dirt road to get to the house. Be on the lookout for a big Black Rock sign, which should align you with the right direction to drive. 4x4s are advisable, but slow and careful driving with a normal car is also doable. Another thing which is beyond the control of the property is the number of locals who come every now and then trying to sell you stuff and offer you guided tours of the Hole in the Wall. Although they can be pushy, remain firm with them and don't fall for their offers, unless you really wish to buy something from them, like fresh fish that they offer. The lack of proper grocery stores in the area can also be problematic if you come unprepared, so stock up in one of the bigger towns with all the essentials before you arrive at the property.

Spectacular location. Clean, neat, new, organized; everything thoughtfully prepared. Softest towels, and comfy pillows. USB plugs next to the bed. Hosts were exceptionally responsive to any questions we had.
