I made my booking a day in advance and received a confirmation email, so I expected everything to be in order. I arrived at the property around 6pm after a tiring five-hour journey from Akure, only to be told unapologetically by the host that my booking was no longer available. They had given the room to someone else and didn’t even bother to call me beforehand. To make matters worse, the host tried to blame me, saying I should have called to confirm. But what’s the point of making an online booking and receiving a confirmation email if I still have to call? I actually tried calling earlier that day, but the number kept going to voicemail. Not everyone checks in early, and if they were unsure I’d show up, a simple courtesy call to confirm would have helped, as other hotels I’ve stayed at have done in the past. Exhausted and frustrated, I ended up spending another hour and a half driving around Ikeja with my Uber driver and luggage, trying to find a hotel with a free room on a busy Saturday night. I eventually did, but not before paying the driver an extra ₦20,000 and spending an additional ₦30,000 on the only available room at the hotel I found, which was well above my budget for that night and what I would have paid at their property. In all, this property cancelling my reservation cost me an extra ₦50,000. I didn’t get to use their property, and I can only hope it’s not as appalling as their customer service.
