Check in was no problem. Went for a walk in the town for a drink and a meal. Come back about 8.30 ish for a drink, waited a couple of minutes to get served as the person serving was sitting the other side of the bar talking. A while later about 10 guys came in who had had a drink or two before and were quite loud. Also the three people behind the bar were at one point all out side smoking. Decided to go my room to watch the football after 15 minutes the TV stooped as there was no lnternet connection. By now the noise in the pub was getting louder and louder and had all so spilled over into the street. I’m nearly 80 years old and I know that when you book to stay in a pub you expect some back ground noise but this was really over the top. Not a good choice if you’re not into the local banter.

I didn’t like the fact that when I arrived staff were not sure if I had a booking or not. The bar area contained 3 elderly drinkers and the setting and reception made me feel uncomfortable as a solo female traveller. I was handed the room key by a staff member who was unable to book me a taxi (I was attending an event at Powderham Castle) because he did not know the local area, being from Exeter. Some 10 miles away… Pressed for time with non-committal answers to my request for assistance booking a taxi and information about where to leave my car I realised all they wanted was the money I had paid for the room.

Total lack of customer service - they just couldn’t be bothered. Being forced to cancel on the spot because the setting and service were concerns.

Spacious clean single room, first floor opposite the loo and next door to the efficient shower. A lively pub whose customers enjoy singing along to the TV music channels. It did not bother me as I can sleep anywhere and through anything. The music stopped at midnight. Excellent value for money, just what I wanted for a one night stay. I would definitely book again.

The flush is poor on the loo opposite Room 1 and needs attention

Load band music, room roasting hot, extortionate cost of WiFi.. No power sockets in the room. Hotel difficult to find. Beds very uncomfortable.

Felt lovely and safe in my room, really nice welcoming place, will happily stay there again next time I visit
