"Exceptional"

10.0

"lovely people, ski in, ski out, way overpriced"

6.0

This hotel has an excellent location as it's a ski in ski out. The breakfasts were very nice with piped classical music and lovely older couple running the place. There are Swiss, Austrian decorations everywhere and you can imagine the decor hasn't changed much in 40 years. The property description said that breakfast was included which is true and evening meals are provided too, at a cost though and there are much cheaper and better options in Zao town. The bed was as hard as a rock, seriously, for the price just wrong. The hot water system took awhile to crank up in the morning but was ok. Internet wifi was free but had no password and didn't work very well in the rooms. The rooms were warm and the drying room was nice and warm too, not every ski lodge does that. For the price charged I would not recommend this lodge unless it was a short stay and you were desperate for an on mountain ski in ski out stay. Look further.

"Snow, Sleep , Repeat (and you'll be happy)"

6.0

The couple who run the hotel are very charming and the location is great (right on the slopes), but if you're looking for fine food, great rooms and bathrooms, please look elsewhere. I was on the slopes all day and got a nice, but small breakfast and ate outside for dinner. If you have a fussy partner, don't bring them here :)

"All good except winter access"

6.0

Once you get to Der Barte it is all quite good. The perfect ski in ski out access is why we chose Der Barte. You get comfy rooms and beds, good breakfast (traditional mixed with western), good bath and friendly and attentive service. Hosts English language was somewhat problematical, but far better than our Japanese:) so enough comms to get by with. The average rating is based entirely on the poor access to the hotel. In winter you have a 100 metre uphill walk through the snow with all baggage/skis apart from what can fit on the hand driven cart which maybe fits a bag or 2 and the host comes down the hill with it. You are all on your own at checkout though with all your baggage having to be lugged down through the snow. Also the main front entrance is closed in Winter (guessing too much shovelling) and they use a hobbit like entrance through the boot/ski room, Parking the hire car was pure guesswork and over the first 2 days we were asked to move it twice from the car parks near the Jupeer. The hotels car park is inaccessible during winter unless you have the best of 4wd's available and skills to match. We ended up using the day car park a further 100m down the road at 1,000 yen/day and they didn't seem to mind us leaving it overnight.

"Very hospitable stay - true ski-in, ski-out"

8.0

A very enjoyable and convenient stay. Right on the edge of the run, just 100 m up from the Jupeer Centre. What to expect: - Very hospitable hosts. Musasi and Yuko really looked after us well, with great spirit. Went the extra mile to ensure we got to and from the bus station with a minimum of fuss. - Good bathroom facilities (shared) with lots of hot water. - A Western lunch and dinner menu, cooked very well. Might have been nice to have a few Japanese options, but these are available a short walk away. - Basic English. Adequate for most interactions, but we used Google translate to confirm key messages (travel details) were clearly understood. What not to expect: - Rooms serviced regularly (i.e. towels and sheet changes). Not a problem for me - we don’t do this daily at home! - Big, fluffy towels. The towels provided were adequate but small. They did dry well in the room each day. All up, a great stay, with excellent snow and skiing conditions.

"Sweet western authentic style ski resort, authentic both decoration and food, cozy for me"

8.0

As others mentioned, to put the ski/snowboard gear at the underground equipment keeping room and open the door to face the ski field to be able to play right there (and could have a rest at this house, in your room, as your shelter anytime) was so perfect for ski/snowboard loving. As with the unique 5 star super fine dining dinner (or even breakfast) in complete french culture (that have wine or drinks to order (would be extra added to final receipt, of course, but I understand because the menu has the price declared clearly), starter, soup, main dish, dessert, tea and coffee after etc.) with clear explanation for the owner uncle, with super nice romantic window view of ski lift and other ski player outside even in the night (first night I got the table inside that had no view, but other nights especially during new year I got the window table so I called it still so nice for me), and for my under rooftop room with the bed that had to climb the ladder to go to my futon, it looked so comfy for me, and the heater worked so perfectly, adjust the heating level so easy just turning the knob. And for lunch, I love the many small restaurants near the ski office (Jupeer), especially the corner cafe house called Chamonee or something like that, or the ski office itself has canteen also, so during my stay I had no need to go to any convenience store much more far away and can focus on my snowboard practice whole day. For other attraction, I walked through zao onsen village, go to public bath (around 1 km from ski office Jupeer), or most far Zao cable station to see Zao monsters on the moutain top (around 3 km from ski office Jupeer), but I still come back in time before 6pm dinner serving time, just to plan the timing in advance lol, and the sun would set around 4.30 - 5pm, so early. Of course, the difficulty to climb up around 100 metres from ski office building during heavy, fluffy snow up to the hill to the resort, especially with baggage or many bags was so harsh. (but you can ask the owner uncle to use the small sledge to side the baggage up and down for you. This point I thought it was permanent obstacle that you should be happy always anytime you should to rest at any resorts on the ski slope around here. And the room seems to not sound proofing, I still heard other people walking in and out their own room during the night (maybe they had new year party, or prepare to use the public bathroom or something)

"On The Slope"

6.0

It literally is on the piste. It is of European design on Japanese slopes which was all the rage when it was built but feels a little out of place today. The couple that run it and never stop working even though they must be well into their sixties are lovely people.Helpful and cheery and of course incredibly polite as most Japanese tend to be. It has a spa bath you can book for free which is wonderful after a hard day's skiing. While it is a little isolated and a bit of a trek to get through the snow down to the village I enjoyed my stay there immensely.
