Holiday Inn Express Charleston-Civic Center by IHG

A basic hotel located near the highway in Charleston. Although it is across the street from the civic centre, the neighbourhood makes a somewhat sketchy impression.

We were disappointed that the $10 parking fee was not mentioned during check-in or when we paid our bill the evening before. Since we were hotel guests, we assumed parking was included, especially because only the concert visitors in the building across the street were asked to pay for parking at that time. We do not mind paying the fee, but it should have been clearly communicated in advance.

Drug addicts walking by outside. Towels were dirty, mirrors were dirty, and AC in the room kept turning off so the room was SUPER hot at night. On top of that I booked this through a third party site and after a long 8 hour drive the king room I booked was not available. As a result, my service dog was not able to sleep in the bed with me and my partner. They told me there was nothing they could do and I had to reach out to hotels.com. After reaching out to hotels.com, they reached out to the hotel and they would not offer me any type of refund or even a credit. Horrible customer service, I would not stay here again.

Very friendly and helpful staff. Everything was clean, all the way from the front door to the drain in the tub.

We've stayed here before, spend many nights in hotels, and have never met a staff as incompetent and rude as this one. Breakfast attendant was absent for 20 minutes, sitting in a back room in the dark on her phone, trying to end breakfast early. There was NO management on duty, so they summoned housekeeping, and things went downhill from there. Apparently they don't care if their guests can have breakfast if they were busy and staff is tired. Housekeeping out front of the hotel next to the overflowing trash cans smoking cigarettes. We were verbally and physically harassed by staff for asking for the breakfast we paid for. They're full of excuses that cancel each other out. Housekeeping supplies and vacuum cleaners were left in hallways i the way ALL night. There are seedy people in the parking lots (but we felt safer with them than the staff.) I've stayed in this hotel for many, many years and even recommended it. Never again. There are FAR better options all over Charleston and downtown. Avoid the HI-E Civic Center. It's a shell of what it used to be.
