Property was quite, cleanliness was not as expected but fairly decent
Bad service. We gave them a referal for another guest from California and it didn't check out. We were sleeping in our room and owner canvelled our stay and thew us out because of another persons behavior. Very sketchy.
A reasonably priced Uber/Lyft ride from the bus center downtown and having the early check-in fee waived got me started in a good frame of mind. The 5-bed dorm is much larger than 6-bed dorms I've stayed in. Scott helps his guests feel like this is more of a hangout spot than rented rooms, so there are gatherings in the backyard and "family" dinners weekly. The upstairs shower blasts about as strong as a fire hose which is how I like it. The foam mattresses are 15" thick; so while they are quite comfortable for sleeping, it's impossible for us shorter people to sit comfortably on the side of the bed. LOL Hamtramck is a quaint little area and possibly the safest place I've ever stayed this side of Toronto.

The property is more hostel than hotel in a neighborhood with relatively few amenities within walking distance.
Thus place is not a hotel. It’s a youth hostel. Staff are friendly. Room was ok. But shared bathrooms were all dirty, lots of hair and stains from beings used and not being washed. Kitchen smelled like trash, trash cans over flowing, sink full of dirty dishes also added to the odor. Pots and pans were sitting on the stove top oily and had not been washed. Otherwise the neighborhood is fair it’s little Yemen here. No toursits sites around here.
The Hamtramck Hostel is a lovely, welcoming place. Scott, the owner and host, goes out of his way to take care of his guests. When I was staying with him, he took me and three other guests on a free personal tour of Detroit!! He is a local, and very knowledgeable and friendly. An extra bonus is his super cute dog, Jazzy.
Excellent neighborhood, where everyone knows everyone, and the locals are super friendly
No surprises which was great. Welcoming staff, quiet, easy wi-fi, wasn't too crowded or difficult to use the shared bathrooms.
