"Terrible rooms, overcharge, and a rude proprietor"

This was the worst experience I have ever had at an Inn. Not only was the guest room full of dead lady bugs, worn out cheap furniture, extension cords everywhere, frayed quilts, and a tiny bathroom, but the proprietor was extremely rude. We booked our stay for the Presidential Suite through the hotel’s online reservations and paid the deposit at the time of booking. I declared in the booking that we would be a family with four adults and two kids based on our older two children being above the age the Inn counted as kids. At the time of checkout the internet was not working at the inn so the proprietor asked to call me back to take the final payment. She called me shortly later and ran the payment through charging my card an additional $130.20 over what I was supposed to pay based on the advertised rate at the time of booking. She said that there was an extra $50.09 per person charge for parties over two people. I pointed out to them that this was not on my receipt or disclosed at the time of reservation and I asked them to please refund the extra money they had charged. She seemed upset that I pointed this out and said she would need to look into things, so I emailed her the receipt I was provided with showing the amount I was supposed to be charged. The receipt clearly shows the size of our party. She said she would call me back when she had looked into things and when I hadn’t received a call back by the afternoon and only a partial return payment was received I called later that day to see why the full amount had not been refunded and only a partial one was given. Another staff member answered the phone and said the proprietor was not available I explained what happened and left my name and phone number with the staff member and told her to relay to the proprietor that it was illegal to charge junk fees and that I would have no choice but to report them to the better business bureau if they did not provide me with a refund for the total amount overcharged. She eventually called me back, admitted it was their mistake, and said that she would return the full amount overcharged, however, instead of being professional she then began to yell at me, and hung up on me. This is not a place in my opinion to visit with a family, or feel like you were given a clean space, and a professional experience when you have a problem as a guest.

"Stay here -perfect country escape! "

Beautiful property very relaxing. Pancakes were perfectly fluffy as you’d expect from a great country inn. Short walk to Stella’s (yum!!) or the on-premise Tavern. Tavern wasn’t open as we were there mid-week but it looked adorable.

Loved the Innkeeper and her staff. Unfortunately, they are short of staff so sometimes getting the room cleaned and/or towels wasn't automatic. But if we asked, they would do so. We would certainly return.

"Very disappointing"

I would like to give this Inn a good review as the people there were friendly and the overall the place was clean with lovely gardens. But due to my lumpy mattressed bed which looked like it was ready to fall apart and the outgas smell from the bedroom faucet which reeked of sewage, I can't. When I complained about the sewer smell, the lady offered me another room but that faucet smelled equally as bad. Nothing more was said to me until I happened to walk by the desk the next day and she asked me if the smell was better. It wasn't so I had to rinse my face and brush my teeth with bottled water. The shower pressure in my bathroom was no more than a trickle which was annoying also. I won't be staying there again.

I cancelled June 8th and Expedia never notified Dowds nor refunded my $1100!!! I will NEVER, EVER use Expedia again!!! Shame, shame on them!!!!

"Guests Deserve More "

We spent 2 nights at Dowd's in a nice large room on the first floor. The administrative staff was friendly and competent. Unfortunately this Inn had no common area where guests can comfortably sit and chat. It also lacked professional staff in the dining room. Advertised as a bed and breakfast the breakfast choices lacked luster. Dowd's could be so much better with some minor fixes. Their guests deserve more.

"Unreasonable"

BEWARE if you are thinking of staying at Dowds Inn for a Dartmouth graduation weekend. They have an advance full payment, non-refundable deposit policy, which is OK if you don’t suffer a serious health event such as a heart attack, stroke, injury, etc.—which is what happened to us. When we had to cancel—we had no choice; when asked, Dowds refused to even consider offering a refund. Even after we found another family to book our room at full price. (Dowds had failed to find a replacement—we did it for them). Dowds—who would thus lose no revenue if they refunded us did not do the right thing but rather chose to keep both families’ payments, doubling their revenue for the room. To be safe, choose somewhere else to stay.
