"Memorable and delightful"

10.0

Another memorable experience at Fischer's. We have been coming here for many years to eat and stay and each time it is a delight. We came for two stays in September 2024 - the first overnight, the second as a family for Sunday lunch. Peaceful, relaxed and restful atmosphere, beautiful and lavish decor that's in keeping with the arts and crafts period architecture, outstanding gardens and location, and, of course, terrific food. Service is really friendly, the staff describing every dish with clear passion. Completely unexpectedly, my wife found a birthday card signed by all the restaurant staff on our dinner table during our overnight stay - a lovely and thoughtful surprise. Overall, one of our absolute favourite places. Thank you.

Our stay at Fischer will make staying at other hotels difficult since they have set a high bar of quality and perfection. Neil, Michael, Otto and John are absolutely amazing. The best stay I’ve ever had anywhere else in the world.

The staff are amazing, Dean, Michael and Auto made our stay there absolutely fantastic. I felt pampered and felt important to the staff. The food is out of this world. I’ll be back.

"Expectations not meant"

6.0

Maybe our expectations were too high but sadly our experience of the hotel and restaurant were not the best and certainly not value for money. Positives first - the hotel is in a lovely location, quiet with beautiful grounds. The two receptionists are great - cheerful, positive and extremely helpful. Great welcome and first impression. Our room was large and attractively decorated. The rhubarb shortbread was delicious and a nice touch. Breakfast was delicious - poached eggs perfectly cooked, toast and jams clearly homemade and the muesli/yoghurt offered a really nice addition. The not so good - whilst our room was large and great, the bathroom was tiny - with the shower over the bath, getting in and out was a challenge especially as the toilet was right by the bath and the sink right alongside. There is no where to sit and dry your hair/put make-up on with a mirror/lighting even though there is a nice desk which would be perfect. Dinner was a real disappointment - pre-dinner drinks took a while to reach us. For dinner we were sat in one of what I think are two dining areas - whilst a beautifully appointed room it lacks some personality - all very formal and hushed conversations. Our amuse-bouche was an egg/mushroom creation - the tall one didn’t find it visually appealing so didn’t try it, I tried it - weird consistency and tasted ok but have had much better. Our two starters were delicious and so was the monkfish fish course. Faultless!! Unfortunately our mains were not - my main course of cod/crab came with a £20 supplement (our meal was already costing (£95 pp) so I was expecting to be wowed - this was not the case - the portion of cod was tiny, embarrassingly so and was so salty I couldn’t eat it (and I love salt in food) - my two small quenelles of crab were tasty but I found two pieces of cartilage in it which meant that I pretty much didn’t eat my main course. The tall one had the beef dish which looked delicious but the beef whilst cooked well was tough and chewy - something that another diner also complained about. Puddings were good. We did mention both of these issues to the waiter - whilst they removed the £20 supplement from my dish, no apology or mention was given re the beef. We have been lucky to eat in different restaurants and this lacked personality and love. There was no drama or real pride with the waiting staff apart from one female member of the team who was lovely. We have no problem paying for excellent food with great service but this felt mean spirited and poor value - with a few tweaks this place could be great but it needs some love and passion injecting into it. Also, it would help to get a decent bar which is manned - limited, and again expensive choices were disappointing and not what I think some of their customers may come to expect.

"No improvement needed, faultless."

10.0

This was a rescheduled visit from July after my wife was ill. Yes it is very expensive, but in my eyes, worth every penny to see the joy she took from our visit, after all, it was her belated birthday treat. We both felt at ease and relaxed, the grounds are very beautiful and well maintained and the food was at another level to anything we have previously experienced. Our room was comfortable and quiet, everything was just spot on. We will return but some saving up required. Thank you to all the staff for your efforts.

"Beautiful garden, breakfast disappointing and little effort to suit coeliacs"

6.0

We stayed on a Monday night, my 60th birthday. The restaurant was closed which we knew so we ate locally that evening. My husband had mentioned that it was my 60th birthday. He had booked a garden room expecting that we would have a garden view. We did not. On arrival there was no acknowledgement of my birthday. I am also coeliac. Gluten free biscuits were left in the room. No fresh milk as there isn't a fridge. Milk was supplied on request but did not last until the morning. At breakfast my husband had granola, yoghurt and berries. I was given the same and just double checked that the granola was gf, it was not. I was then given yoghurt and berries. No effort was made to create gluten free granola. No choice. Just the 'without' response to coeliac. For this level of hotel I think that is incredibly poor and disappointing. I am disappointed for my husband who thought he was booking something special for me. The coffee, tea and juice were excellent. The waiting staff very friendly. My poached eggs were cooked well. I think they were served on a potato cake of some description. It was very chewy. The salmon was excellent. The gf toast was just a standard white packet gf bread. I did not eat it. So all in all somewhat mixed feelings, however the garden is stunning and I enjoyed talking with the head gardener

"Faultless meal and service"

10.0

We meet our Derbyshire friends annually for dinner and had to book Fischer Hall at the last minute due to unforeseen circumstances. It was tremendous. Everything about the evening was superb. The staff were incredibly professional but also attentive and charming. In fact I it was some of the best service I've ever experienced . The food was fantastic and innovative. The surroundings are beautiful.

"Could not fault it"

10.0

When booking in January we were made aware that no food is served on Monday and Tuesday and we were given recommendations to eat nearby (which were excellent by the way). The hotel did let us know a couple of weeks ago that food is now served to residents on these two days but we were happy with our arrangements. We had a garden room which was lovely. Beautiful decorations throughout, crisp bed linen, soft fluffy towels, lovely toiletries, tea, coffee etc. Breakfast was excellent. The grounds are lovely to walk round. We did not use the terrace. We had dinner on our last night which again was excellent - Michelin star standard - Great service from the staff with a good atmosphere. Not a cheap stay but worth every penny.

"Disappointing"

4.0

Stayed overnight as part of a birthday treat. No lie in possible on my birthday as there is a large construction project ongoing at the back of the hotel ( which we should have been informed about at the time of booking) which woke us, then the staff socialising and talking loudly outside the locked second door to our room ensured we stayed awake. I did not sleep that night as the room smelled like an old man, I suspect it’s that old school gloss paint smell that lingers for months but it was very strong. Very nice crisp bed linen. Nice bathroom. Suite not up to 4 star standard though. The hotel is renowned for its food but they don’t serve dinner on Tuesday or Weds. Instead you are provided with a taxi and a voucher for the village pub where the food is average if I’m being generous. We knew this beforehand but it feels like “ here’s what you could have won” when you stay on those nights. There is no spa and with no Michelin food it doesn’t feel like there is much point staying there. The lounge area is depressing in a Jacobean style ( although it’s not a Jacobean house) , it’s cramped and uncomfortable. Breakfast was lovely apart from the amuse bouche ( at breakfast!) of a pixie portion of granola which was dreadful. Lauren who checked us in and served us in the bar was absolutely lovely. The service was fantastic overall. Outside on the terrace looked really fabulous too and I’m sure when it’s sunny ( it was torrential rain when we stayed) it’s an asset to the hotel. The gardens are beautiful. We would maybe stay again, we were disappointed this time but we can see how in different circumstances it could be better for instance in a different room, on a day when the restaurant is open and when the construction behind is finished.
