"Comfortable room / Breakfast just OK"

6.0

Following a late evening flight into Cork, we stayed a night in Macroom before making our way home to the wilds of West Cork (with a shop in Dunnes as a bonus). Our expectation was for a very comfortable night, and a great breakfast. The room and the bed were indeed comfortable, with a decent shower, and everything spotlessly clean. However, it all felt dated. The hotel was last revamped I believe 2001, so the room furnishings and public spaces looked of that vintage, and the TV likely at least 10 years old. Still - a good night's sleep in a comfortable bed, followed by good shower, so no complaints. Breakfast was a disappointment. The buffet and the hot items were just "OK". No omelette option was available (we asked). The bacon and sausages were overcooked, and maybe from a pre-cooked tray in the kitchen. Eggs arrived "over hard", not the requested "over easy". The black pudding was not "Clonakilty" standard (and I like my black pudding). Coffee was served by the individual cup being brought by the server, not a cafetiere at the table. We complained about the coffee and were told we were "allowed one cup of Americano", and could get that instead. Not the great breakfast we had been looking forward to. We provided the above feedback on checkout. So all in all - OK, but at that price it was a lot to pay for "OK".

"A great place to stay to explore the southern part of the Republic of Ireland"

10.0

I stayed at the Castle Hotel for four weeks in September 2025, the fourth year in a row. The hotel is located in the middle of Macroom, County Cork so there are plenty of restaurants, shops, pubs, chippers, chemists and even a couple of bookstores. There is a bus station a couple of blocks from the hotel. There is a train station in Millstreet which is about 15 miles away. There are at least three ATM’s within a couple blocks of the hotel. There is free parking behind the hotel, but the spaces are tight and there were some nights spaces were difficult to find. There is parking in front of the hotel but you need to have your car moved by 10:00 a.m. or you might receive a ticket. There are plenty of petrol stations within a mile of the hotel. There is a famer’s market every Tuesday in the town square which across the road from the hotel. Some of the rooms have air conditioning. My room this year did not have AC and since Ireland was having a spell of very hot weather, I missed the AC. The front desk brought a small fan to my room which did help. There is a small grocery store right next door to the hotel, it was a great place to buy snacks. Since I was at the hotel for four weeks, I occasionally needed to send out my laundry. I would drop my laundry bag at the front desk in the morning and later that same day my clean clothes would be in my room when I returned from my day of adventures. The cost of the laundry was added to my hotel bill. I did have the package that included free breakfast. I always found the food and service good. I stayed in room 104 which was in the front of the hotel. My room was quiet and clean. I will share there were a few nights that the music from the nearby pub could be heard in my room. It was never a concern to me because it did wrap up before midnight and I was on vacation. There are two restaurants and a pub in the hotel. The Next Door Café is a causal place that is a coffee shop that serves food. B’s Restaurant is a nice place for dinner, but they quit serving at 8:15 p.m. even during the weekends. There were a few times that I ended up at the chipper down the street because the restaurant had quit serving. The staff is great. Since I stayed there so long, I got to know many of the staff members. When I walk through the lobby, they would always say hello using my name. The hotel is in a perfect location to explore the southern part of the Republic of Ireland. Blarney Castle is 20 miles, Killarney is 30 miles, Gougana Barra is 20 miles, Cork City English Market is 25 miles, Kinsale is 30 miles, Skibbereen is 35 miles, Cobh is 40 miles, and the Shannon airport is 90 miles away, it is less than a two-hour drive. The hotel is located just off N22 so it is an easy drive for an American tourist.
