"Good but a few things let down our experience"

8.0

Really friendly staff, the perfect location to do Little Adam's Peak hike and walk to nine arch bridge, and beautiful views of the mountains from the rooms and restaurant. You can easily wander down the main street too. Our rooms were massive and had a great balcony area. The staff also arranged a cake upon request which tasted great. The general manager and others went out of their way to make you feel welcomed.

We were here for a special birthday and there are a few things I wish I had known in advance (as I would have picked a different hotel). These aren't anyone's fault per se but I wanted to share in case it helps someone. They are expanding the hotel and our rooms were in the new block. Whilst the rooms themselves are nice, you are located away from the main building and other rooms, and it felt quite isolating being down very dark and quiet corridors. The corridor itself was not yet finished (not a problem for me personally) but there was construction work going on outside which did wake us up at night. The restaurant for dinner is not the one you see in the pictures with the stunning views of the mountain. It's smaller, darker and has no views. We picked this hotel as we wanted special views for a special birthday - and I had specifically asked about this weeks before to check, requested to reserve a table with good views etc. and all was confirmed. So it was a genuine shame to find out upon arrival that this wasn't the case, and it really impacted our plans for the evening. Finally, the lady who does the massages is genuinely brilliant but works really long hours with no / few breaks. You could see how exhausted she was (to the point we cancelled one of our massages as we felt so bad asking her to do more). I sincerely hope the hotel are looking after her wellbeing.

"Perfect location, wonderful views, friendly service but unsure of the value for money."

8.0

The location is great, views are stunning and only a 10 min walk into the Main Street of Ella for restaurants, shops and supermarkets. The Main Street is too busy and loud and best avoided for accommodation. The hotel location is close to access the 9 arch bridge hike (walk to it in 15 mins) and direct access to Adam’s Peak hike and the touristy entertainment (skywalk, pool club, Ella swing). The garden and birds make the hotel unique. There is a lot of staff around at breakfast service, otherwise leave you alone to get on with your holiday with a friendly greeting when they see you. They care a lot about reviews which is understandable in what is a very competitive tourist area. All the usual options for a buffet breakfast that you get in Sri Lanka, mix of Sri Lankan curries, fruit, salad, cornflakes, bread, and an egg station to get an omelette. The room was a good, large size for a few nights stay and overall clean with a good, hot shower.

Beds not the most comfortable. TV didn’t work but we think that might be on purpose because the construction build of the hotel is a bit shabby and noise really travels through the hotel. The management are conscious of noise and send a message before arrival asking to not play music, sing, or drink in rooms, which is a good thing for all guests. The point being it’s the hotel design more so guests being the issue. Personal opinion and to put in context we have stayed in five and four star hotels in various countries that only offer buffet breakfast and only a few do it well. I don’t like buffets in general because there’s so much food wastage, which is harder to feel comfortable with when exploring such a beautiful country where poverty is high and the food quality can suffer. I feel most hotels would save money and get better reviews if they ask guests what style of breakfast they wanted and prepare it freshly for the amount of guests due to stay. I think it’s an Ella thing and we left booking too late but it’s hard to find a good mid range, value for money four to five star hotel. I felt this hotel was slightly overpriced vs other places we stayed in Sri Lanka

"Without the construction work it would be fine."

7.0

Nice big room with a great veranda and view. Good breakfast.

Lots of construction going on so it was noisy. Shower runs from scolding hot to cold and back and forth.
