"Terrible experience"

We got there in the middle of the night after our flight was cancelled. We had booked and payed via Booking.com but they couldn't find our booking. Apparently this wasn't the first time that hat happened. We were told there is nothing they could do, that there are no more rooms. Another pair came in and they faced the same problem. After two hours of waiting, discussing and almost crying (it was now 4 o'clock in the morning) they told us that they have one room free after all, and after some more discussing, they gave it to us on the premise that we paid cash for the room. We were told we would get the money for the original room back from Booking. That hasn't happened yet, even after sending multiple inquiries to Booking as well as uploading all the asked for documents. The room we finally got smelled like smoke.
