Yufuin-Sanso Waremokou

2 private onsens, both outdoors were spectacular. Massage chair for added relaxation which was definitely utilised. Large and spacious accomodation. Futon and blanket were out of this world comfy. No problems at all with the customer service - top notch. Even gave us a photo to commemorate our stay. Dinner and breakfast were spectacular and service was impeccable. Would stay here again if we ever come back to Yufuin!!!

Cleanliness below normal Japanese ryokan standards. Bath mats looked like they were reused and not washed between guests. Room cleanliness below typical Japanese standards (would have been OK for a budget hotel in the US, but very unusual for japan). Rooms are a little older, which I would've been totally fine with if they looked well cleaned and well maintained). Dinner was also disappointing, to the point we wondered if the chef was out sick or something. Seemed like it was prepared by someone who had no idea what they were doing. Very atypical and weird combinations I've never seen before or since in Japan. Not in a good creative way, but more of a head scratching way. For example, they put what seemed to be a frozen store bought dumpling in the chawanmushi, there was a literal surprise bone in our sashimi, and they served kimchi instead of pickles which seemed straight from the supermarket. They also dramatically overcooked the bungo beef wagyu, to the point it was chewy. The meal was quite memorable at least. Breakfast was a bit better as it was a standard Japanese breakfast. Nothing special but also not bad. We were satisfied with it. All in all, I'm not sure what's going on with this place. The owners seem very nice, but I don't think they are very involved in the details of running the place. It distinctly lacks the attention to detail that one expects at a ryokan. We've stayed at dozens of ryokans across japan spanning all price ranges and this is the most disappointing one we've ever been to. I'm taking the time to leave this review because the place has so much potential. The location and views are epic, especially from the outdoor private onsens. If they just hired some better staff to support and clean the place, it wouldn't be hard to turn it around.

부모님과 같이 방문했습니다. 배정된 방이 진짜 넓고 무엇보다 개인온천이 너무너무너무 좋았습니다. 3시부터 유후인역에서 픽업서비스를 해주시고, 아침에도 대려다주십니다. 음식도 너무 맛있었어요

저녁 가이세키 요리 바베큐 처음에 구워주시는데 고기랑 야채 직접구워주시는건 좋은데, 일부 타서 탄맛이 심했어요 ㅠㅠ

Seems a bit non-responsive with emails and phone calls. We arrived in Yufuin station at noon on the day of check-in. Our plan was to drop off our stuff at the hotel before the official check-in time at 3pm and then head out again. We called and messaged the hotel several times the day before, and in the morning on the day of check-in, but all to no avail. Even though an early pick-up might not be possible, they could have told us on the phone or via email and confirmed with us another time for pick-up. The disappointing part was we could not get ahold of the hotel staff AT ALL until a couple of hours before check-in. We only found out they could pick up us at 3pm until after 1pm that day. Once we arrived at the onsen hotel, we were taken directly to our room. We were greeted by a local staff and a foreign staff. We were not given any introduction about the facilities in the hotel, ie where the public bath was, the daily housekeeping schedule, shuttle service time, etc. We had to ask each on our own after we settled in. We were assigned a foreign staff to take care of us daily throughout our stay. Don't know if you could request for a local staff for a more authentic experience. Another thing was, the temp in the private bath needed to be adjusted on your own; it was not maintained at a constant temp. So, it was a bit inconvenient. Overall, i think this onsen hotel offers good value for money. And the staff are good.

Excellent service from the hosts, the kaiseki meals were delicious; they even prepared elaborate meals for the kids. The room was very spacious and comfortable and there was even a massage chair. The private outdoor onsens were very relaxing.
